Overview

Bellamy is a character in the manga series ONE PIECE, famously known by the moniker "Bellamy the Hyena." Originally the captain of the Bellamy Pirates, he operated as an affiliate under the former Seven Warlords of the Sea member Donquixote Doflamingo. He later retires from piracy to become an apprentice dyer.

Appearance

Bellamy has short blonde hair, a characteristic sinister smirk, and wears sunglasses rested up on his forehead. The Jolly Roger symbol of the Donquixote Family is tattooed on his chest. When activating his Devil Fruit power, parts of his body, such as his legs and arms, morph into physical spiral springs.

Personality

Initially, Bellamy was an arrogant and ruthless realist who ridiculed dreams and romantic pursuits in piracy, preferring to steal from others and mock those who believed in legends. However, after his defeat by Monkey D. Luffy and his subsequent journey to Skypiea, his mindset underwent a profound change. He discarded his former mockery, developed deep respect for Monkey D. Luffy, and demonstrated a strong sense of personal pride and loyalty, choosing to honor his past choices even after being heartlessly discarded by Donquixote Doflamingo.

Abilities

Having eaten the Paramecia-type Spring-Spring Fruit (Bane Bane no Mi), Bellamy is a Spring Human capable of transforming his body parts into springs. By utilizing elasticity and recoil, he can launch himself at blinding speeds that become invisible to the human eye, causing destructive shockwaves upon impact. His techniques include Spring Snipe, Spring Hopper, and Spring Death Knock. Because his trajectory is predominantly linear, his movements can be predicted by skilled opponents, and his spring structure lacks resistance to lateral attacks. In the New World, he also demonstrates mastery of both Armament Haki and Observation Haki.

Background

Hailing from Notice in the North Blue, Bellamy idolized Donquixote Doflamingo and formed the Bellamy Pirates under his banner. In Mock Town on Jaya, he mocked Monkey D. Luffy's crew and stole gold from Mont Blanc Cricket, prompting Monkey D. Luffy to defeat him with a single punch. Abandoned by Donquixote Doflamingo, Bellamy led his crew to Skypiea, losing companions along the perilous route, but secured a golden pillar to regain Donquixote Doflamingo's favor. In Dressrosa, he entered the Corrida Colosseum tournament, only to be targeted for execution by his master's officers. Despite knowing he was betrayed, Bellamy fought Monkey D. Luffy one last time to satisfy his own pride. Following the battle, he retired from piracy and began training as a dyer's apprentice.

Relationships

Bellamy held lifelong admiration for Donquixote Doflamingo, though Doflamingo viewed him as disposable. While Bellamy originally despised Monkey D. Luffy, his swift defeat and trip to Skypiea transformed his attitude into deep respect, leading Monkey D. Luffy to eventually consider him a friend. He also shares history with his former vice-captain Sarquiss and interacted with Bartolomeo, who saved him from an assassination attempt in the Dressrosa arena.

Trivia

His name originates from the real-world North American pirate Samuel Bellamy. His birthday, August 7, is a Japanese wordplay on his nickname "Hyena" (ha-i-e-na = 8-7). In the story, the dyer town where he pursues his new craft after retiring from piracy features a banner resembling the Jolly Roger of the Red Hair Pirates.
