Overview

The Going Merry is the first pirate ship owned by the Straw Hat Pirates in the series ONE PIECE. Gifted to the crew by Kaya and her butler Merry in Syrup Village, this small caravel served as their primary vessel throughout the early half of their grand journey. Beyond being a simple mode of transportation and shelter, the ship developed a consciousness known as a Klabautermann due to the immense love and care it received from the crew. It holds a pivotal role in the story as a cherished companion, famously braving broken limits to rescue its crew during the desperate climax at Enies Lobby.

Appearance

The Going Merry is a small caravel ship measuring 13 meters in length and 11 meters in height, equipped with three masts and triangular sails. Its bow features a distinct sheep head figurehead, unpainted in the original manga but depicted in white within the anime adaptation. Steered by a control rod rather than a wheel, the vessel carries four cannons and houses a kitchen, bath, and flush toilet inside. Several mikan trees sit on the deck, and it temporarily gained a rooster crest and wings for its flight to Skypiea.

Personality

Manifesting as a Klabautermann due to the intense affection bestowed by the Straw Hat Pirates, the ship's spirit possesses a deeply devoted and selfless nature. Despite suffering terminal structural failure, its sheer determination to protect its crew led it to plead for one final voyage. The spirit exhibits profound loyalty and warmth, feeling apologetic for not being able to carry the crew further on their journey, yet expressing immense gratitude and happiness for the cherished memories and care it received throughout its travels with them.

Abilities

The Going Merry operates using three triangular sails and a stern control rod, boasting combat capability through a main cannon and three sub-cannons. Beneath the deck, it features a seawater filtration and power generation system that draws up ocean water, purifies it into fresh hot water for bathing, and generates electricity. It can be outfitted with a rooster crest and side wings to form a flying model capable of riding vertical sea currents. Additionally, its embodied spirit possessed the ability to repair structural damage autonomously and steer the vessel without a crew across dangerous seas to perform rescues.

Background

Originally designed by the butler Merry in Syrup Village, the ship was presented to Monkey D. Luffy and his crew by Kaya as a reward for thwarting Captain Kuro. The vessel carried the Straw Hat Pirates through countless perilous battles across the Grand Line. Lacking a professional shipwright, Usopp constantly performed makeshift repairs on its mounting injuries. Upon arriving at Water 7, shipbuilders pronounced its keel damaged beyond repair. This revelation caused intense internal conflict, leading to Usopp temporarily leaving the crew. Miraculously, after receiving temporary repairs from Iceburg, the ship sailed unattended to Enies Lobby, rescuing the crew from certain doom. Shortly after the escape, the ship split in two, and Luffy gave it a emotional burning funeral at sea, ending its long voyage.

Relationships

Monkey D. Luffy treated the ship's bow head as his personal seat and ultimately led its funeral ceremony. Usopp held a uniquely powerful attachment to the ship, performing endless repairs and even fighting Luffy to protect it when it was declared unfixable. Nami planted and tended to her home village's mikan trees on its deck. Originally created by the butler Merry and gifted by Kaya, the ship later communicated its heart to Iceburg, who granted its wish for a final voyage. Following its demise, Franky honored its legacy by building the Thousand Sunny and Mini Merry II, incorporating the ship's iconic design.

Trivia

The ship's name originates from the butler Merry who designed it, while also serving as a pun on the sheep figurehead, the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and the English word for cheerful. While the anime adaptation depicts the figurehead and wooden trim with white paint, Eiichiro Oda's original manga illustrations display them as natural, unpainted timber. Additionally, the real-world live-action adaptation garnered attention for depicting the sheep figurehead with a notably realistic, goat-like appearance. Bandai Spirits has released various scale plastic model kits of the vessel, including its Flying Model and memorial color editions.
