Shanks

Overview

Shanks is a central character in ONE PIECE, serving as the chief of the Red Hair Pirates and one of the Four Emperors ruling the New World. Formerly a pirate apprentice aboard the ship of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, he is the pivotal figure who saved Monkey D. Luffy's life and inspired him to become a pirate. Operating without any Devil Fruit powers, Shanks relies on extraordinary mastery of Haki and formidable combat ability, commanding immense respect across the globe and holding unique diplomatic sway even with the World Government's highest leaders.

Appearance

Shanks is defined by his bright red hair, light facial hair, and three vertical scar lines over his left eye inflicted by Marshall D. Teach. Having lost his left arm twelve years ago to save Luffy, he leaves the socket empty with his sleeve tied at the end. His standard outfit consists of an unbuttoned white shirt, patterned trousers, sandals, and a long black mantle. Originally left-handed, he wears his saber Gryphon on his right hip. He formerly wore Gol D. Roger's straw hat until entrusting it to Luffy upon leaving Fousha Village.

Personality

Generally laid-back and easygoing, Shanks possesses a broad-minded disposition that allows him to brush off personal insults with laughter. He has a deep love for banquets and drinking West Blue sake with his crew, frequently ending up with hangovers. However, he maintains an absolute stance against anyone who harms his friends, willing to sacrifice his own body to shield them. While respectful toward honorable opponents, he exhibits zero hesitation or mercy when dealing with true hostiles, unleashing his full power from the very start of a confrontation.

Abilities

Shanks relies strictly on physical excellence and high-level swordsmanship with his saber Gryphon, having once dueled Dracule Mihawk on equal terms prior to losing his left arm. He is a master of all three forms of Haki. His Conqueror's Haki is exceptionally powerful, capable of paralyzing Marine Admirals from miles away and damaging physical surroundings. He possesses the unique capability known as Observation Killing to deny opponents their future vision, and he can execute Kamusari—a powerful shockwave technique inherited from Roger that can defeat high-tier foes in a single blow.

Background

Born on God Valley in the West Blue, Shanks was discovered inside a treasure chest by the Roger Pirates as an infant during the God Valley Incident and raised on their ship. After serving as an apprentice alongside Buggy and witnessing Roger's execution, he formed the Red Hair Pirates. Twelve years ago, while staying at Fousha Village, he acquired the Gomu Gomu no Mi and met young Luffy. After sacrificing his left arm to protect the boy from a Sea King, he entrusted Luffy with his straw hat before returning to the Grand Line, eventually rising to the rank of Yonko.

Relationships

Shanks profoundly respects his former captain, Gol D. Roger, whose straw hat and combat techniques he inherited. He maintains a comical, bickering camaraderie with his former apprentice peer, Buggy. He serves as a role model and idol to Monkey D. Luffy, bound by their shared promise. He maintains a friendly relationship with his former rival swordsman, Dracule Mihawk. In contrast, he remains deeply vigilant regarding Marshall D. Teach, the man responsible for his facial scars. He is also biologically linked to the Noble Figarland family.
