Mohji

Overview

Mohji is a pirate character in the manga series ONE PIECE, known by the epithet "Beast Tamer." He initially serves as the first mate of the Buggy Pirates and later holds executive positions within Buggy's Delivery and the Cross Guild. Accompanied by his pet lion Richie, he acts as a prominent member of Captain Buggy's crew, first encountering Monkey D. Luffy and his companions in Orange Town within the East Blue.

Appearance

Mohji features a unique hairstyle resembling animal ears or curled horns on the sides of his head, which grows exceptionally fast in those specific areas. He wears an outfit reminiscent of a lion costume. Following the time skip, his appearance alters significantly, becoming heavily overweight alongside his pet lion, Richie.

Personality

Although boastful about his ability to command any animal, Mohji is prone to blunders and readily begs for mercy when confronted by overwhelming opponents. Despite his cowardly tendencies, he remains genuinely loyal to Captain Buggy and holds affection for his food-motivated pet lion, Richie. In dire circumstances involving his leadership, he is quick to express skeptical or resigning remarks.

Abilities

As a beast tamer, Mohji primarily battles by commanding his giant lion, Richie, while personally utilizing a whip and his fists. He possesses remarkable physical strength, capable of carrying the massive body of Richie by himself, and holds enough combat ability to fight evenly with his crewmate Cabaji. While he claims no animal can resist his control, he failed to tame the dog Chouchou.

Background

Hailing from the East Blue, Mohji serves under Captain Buggy from the start of the series. In Orange Town, he burned down the store guarded by the dog Chouchou, which infuriated Monkey D. Luffy, who promptly knocked him out in a single strike. During Buggy's temporary absence, he fought Cabaji for leadership of the crew, but both were knocked unconscious by a sleepwalking Richie, briefly causing them to lose their status to lower-ranking members before Buggy rescued them.

Relationships

Mohji is a loyal subordinate to Captain Buggy, following him through various faction changes. He shares a close bond with his pet lion, Richie, who serves as his primary partner in battle. He maintains a competitive relationship with his fellow officer Cabaji, with whom he once dueled for control of the crew. He holds a past animosity toward Monkey D. Luffy and the dog Chouchou following their conflict in Orange Town.

Trivia

According to the series' SBS question-and-answer column, his distinct animal-ear hairstyle is the result of his hair growing at an unusually rapid rate in those specific spots. His drastic weight gain after the time skip represents one of the most visible physical transformations among Buggy's core crew.
