Karoo

Overview

Karoo is a Super Spot-Billed Duck from the manga and anime series One Piece, serving as the loyal companion to Princess Nefertari Vivi of the Arabasta Kingdom. He holds the position of captain within the Super Spot-Billed Duck Squad, the fastest movement unit in the realm. Having been by Vivi's side since childhood, he assisted her during her infiltration of Baroque Works and joined the Straw Hat Pirates on their voyage. Although he parted ways with the ship after the events in Arabasta, he remains officially recognized as an honorary member of the crew.

Appearance

Karoo is a large bird with yellow plumage, wearing a pilot-like hat fitted with goggles on his head and a riding saddle on his back. Following injuries sustained during the Arabasta arc, he is depicted with bandages wrapped around his left wing.

Personality

Karoo is naturally timid, prone to panic, and shies away from combat, often providing comedic relief through his absent-minded behavior and misunderstandings of direct orders. Despite his fearful disposition, he possesses a deeply caring heart and unwavering loyalty. When Nefertari Vivi or his allies are in peril, he overcomes his cowardice, showing remarkable resolve to act as a personal shield to protect them. Among the Straw Hat Pirates, he shares a particularly close camaraderie with Usopp.

Abilities

Karoo possesses exceptional leg strength characteristic of Super Spot-Billed Ducks, enabling him to run at speeds exceeding those of a leopard. Although members of his species are generally incapable of flight, he once managed to fly a short distance through sheer willpower. His capabilities focus primarily on high-speed locomotion for evasion, transport, and delivering vital messages. Additionally, teeth appear inside his beak when he consumes food.

Background

Raised Alongside Nefertari Vivi since childhood, Karoo joined her covert infiltration of Baroque Works, acting as her partner under her codename Miss Wednesday. After meeting the Straw Hat Pirates at Whiskey Peak, he traveled with them toward Arabasta. At Little Garden, he withstood severe abuse from enemy agents without betraying Vivi. Upon arriving in Arabasta, he successfully delivered a critical letter to King Cobra and carried Vivi across the battlefield in Alubarna while shielding her from enemy attacks despite suffering severe injuries. Following the resolution of the conflict, he remained in Arabasta with Vivi.

Relationships

Karoo shares a profound bond of trust with Nefertari Vivi, having been her primary partner and mount since youth. He maintains a close friendship with Usopp, often teaming up with him during battles. Monkey D. Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates view him as a full-fledged comrade. During the conflict against Baroque Works, he risked his life to shield Vivi from agents such as Mr. 5 and Mr. 2 Bon Kurei.

Trivia

Karoo's name is derived from the Japanese word for spot-billed duck (karugamo) alongside wordplay on his name. He has achieved notable placements in official character popularity polls. Although he does not physically appear in the early seasons of the live-action adaptation, his presence is acknowledged within the narrative.
