Gloriosa

Overview

Gloriosa, widely known by her epithet Elder Nyon, is a character from the manga and anime series One Piece. She is the former empress of Amazon Lily, ruling three generations prior to the current empress, Boa Hancock. Despite her diminished status and advanced age, she serves as a vital advisor to the Kuja tribe due to her extensive understanding of foreign affairs and the world beyond their island.

Appearance

Gloriosa is a diminutive, elderly woman with a wrinkled face, blue eyes, and long, wavy pink hair. Her outfit consists of a blue long-sleeved top with epaulettes, a matching blue skirt fastened with a red sash, and a white cape. She wears jewelry including earrings and bracelets, and regularly carries a snake that serves as her walking stick.

Personality

Pragmatic and grounded, Gloriosa serves as a rare voice of reason among the Kuja. She frequently offers blunt wisdom to the arrogant Boa Hancock, demonstrating resilience even when mistreated for doing so. Although she once abandoned Amazon Lily, she maintains a profound sense of duty and concern for the nation and its people.

Abilities

Gloriosa possesses remarkable physical durability, showing an ability to land unharmed after being repeatedly thrown from high places. She has extensive knowledge of world politics and rare medical ailments such as Love Sickness. She efficiently uses her accompanying snake as a walking stick and possessed the capabilities required to sail as a member of a legendary pirate crew in her past.

Background

Gloriosa originally ruled Amazon Lily as its empress, but fled the island in her youth to survive the fatal Love Sickness. Over thirty-eight years ago, she was a member of the Rocks Pirates. Years later, alongside Silvers Rayleigh and Shakuyaku, she rescued the Gorgon sisters—Boa Hancock, Boa Sandersonia, and Boa Marigold—after their escape from Mariejois and returned them to Amazon Lily. She later informed Monkey D. Luffy about the scheduled public execution of Portgas D. Ace.

Relationships

Gloriosa acts as a benefactor to the Gorgon sisters—Boa Hancock, Boa Sandersonia, and Boa Marigold—having protected them after their escape from captivity. Despite being mistreated by Boa Hancock, Gloriosa diagnoses Hancock's Love Sickness for Monkey D. Luffy and assists them both. She shares a history with Silvers Rayleigh and Shakuyaku through their shared rescue effort, as well as a past connection to the Rocks Pirates.

Trivia

Her name is derived from Gloriosa, a genus of flowering plants in the lily family. In the narrative, she is predominantly referred to as Elder Nyon. She is one of the few empresses of Amazon Lily to have survived Love Sickness, which she achieved by abdicating her title and leaving the country during her youth.
