Marco

Overview

Marco is a prominent pirate from ONE PIECE, widely known by his epithet Marco the Phoenix. He served as the 1st division commander and ship doctor of the Whitebeard Pirates under Edward Newgate. Positioned as the second-in-command, he earned the deep trust of his captain and crew, leading the remnants of the fleet following their captain's demise. He is easily recognized by his calm composure and distinct speech mannerisms.

Appearance

Marco has blonde hair styled in a distinct shape reminiscent of a pineapple, accompanied by facial stubble. His signature attire consists of an open purple shirt revealing his chest, a light blue sash tied around his waist, dark trousers, and sandals. This basic outfit has remained largely unchanged since his early days as an apprentice. In the New World post-timeskip era, he also wears red-rimmed eyeglasses.

Marco possesses a remarkably calm, warm, and protective nature, acting as a dependable figure to his comrades. He holds immense devotion toward Edward Newgate, whom he respects like a father figure, while treating others with gentle courtesy. Even in the face of dire adversity, he maintains a cool composure and shows a profound sense of responsibility toward honoring the wishes and safety of his allies.

Abilities

Marco has consumed the Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit known as the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix. This allows him to transform into a blue-flamed phoenix and instantly regenerate from any damage using the Flames of Resurrection. He utilizes technique variations such as Fujiazami for defense, Hououin for shockwave kicks, and Seiengan for ranged flame attacks, while also using his flames to provide first-aid treatment to others. He is additionally proficient in both Busoshoku and Kenbunshoku Haki.

Background

Having served in the Whitebeard Pirates for over three decades since his youth, Marco was a foundational member of the crew. During the Marineford Summit War, he actively engaged Admiral-level foes to protect his comrades and carried out the command to safeguard Monkey D. Luffy following Portgas D. Ace's death. A year after the conflict, the remaining crew suffered defeat against Marshall D. Teach during the Payback War. Following the crew's dispersal, Marco relocated to Edward Newgate's hometown of Sphinx, serving peacefully as a village doctor before later traveling to Wano to aid the alliance in their raid.

Relationships

Marco views his captain Edward Newgate with absolute devotion, affectionately calling him 'Oyaji'. He shared a deep bond with Portgas D. Ace, which led him to fiercely protect Monkey D. Luffy during the Summit War. He maintains long-standing ties of mutual respect with Kozuki Oden, Izo, and Nekomamushi, while standing in direct opposition to Marshall D. Teach following their clash in the Payback War.

Trivia

Marco's favorite food is pineapples, which he enjoys eating whole with the skin attached, whereas he dislikes beans. His hobby is collecting bar coasters. His name is derived from one of the four principal Seraphim mentioned in biblical texts.
