Overview
Curly Dadan is a character from the manga series ONE PIECE. She is the boss of the Dadan Family, a mountain bandit group based on Mount Corvo on Dawn Island in the Goa Kingdom of the East Blue. Coerced by Marine Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, she took in Monkey D. Luffy, Portgas D. Ace, and Sabo, serving as their foster mother.
Appearance
She is an exceptionally tall woman with a heavily built, robust frame, though she possessed an attractive appearance in her youth. She has long, curly orange hair and brown eyes, and is a heavy smoker who is almost always seen with a cigarette in her mouth.
Personality
On the surface, Dadan acts like a rough, selfish mountain bandit who uses harsh language, but she is fundamentally warm-hearted and deeply compassionate. Although she initially resented taking care of the children thrust upon her by Garp, she grew to view them as her own sons. She is emotionally clumsy and classic tsundere, stubbornly denying her tears even while crying uncontrollably over the boys' departures or news about them. She also possesses good practical sense, regularly reading the newspaper to keep informed about world events.
Abilities
As the leader of a mountain bandit clan, she demonstrates strong authority over her subordinates. Despite her age, she has high physical capabilities, fighting with a wooden club and her bare fists. She led her crew to raid the Bluejam Pirates' hideout to engage in direct combat, and possessed enough physical strength to beat Marine Vice Admiral Garp with a club.
Background
While operating as a mountain bandit on Mount Corvo, Dadan was blackmailed by Garp over her past crimes into raising the infant Ace. She later took in Luffy and Sabo, struggling constantly to manage the three unruly boys. After risking her life to protect them from the Bluejam Pirates, she tearfully saw each of them off when they set sail. Following Ace's death at the Summit War, she was overwhelmed with grief and violently confronted Garp upon his return to the village. She continues to follow news of Luffy and Sabo through newspaper reports.
Relationships
She has a long-standing relationship with Monkey D. Garp, whom she normally feared due to him withholding her criminal record in exchange for raising the boys, though she attacked him in grief after Ace's death. She feels intense maternal affection for her foster sons, Luffy, Ace, and Sabo. She maintains friendly contact with Makino and Mayor Woop Slap of Foosha Village, and lives alongside her loyal subordinates, including Dogra and Magra.
Trivia
She is a wanted criminal with a bounty of 7.8 million Belly issued by the World Government. Her favorite food is wild buffalo meat. In the series, she is shown maintaining a scrapbook of newspaper cutouts detailing the exploits of the Straw Hat Pirates.
