Overview
Jesus Burgess is a prominent antagonist in the manga and anime series ONE PIECE. As one of the founding members of the Blackbeard Pirates, he fulfills the role of helmsman and serves as the captain of the crew's First Ship. Known by his moniker "Champion," he is a powerful brawler who relies on raw strength in combat.
Appearance
He is a massive man with a heavily muscular upper body and disproportionately short, thin legs. He wears a wrestling mask over his eyes and a large champion belt. Following the timeskip, he grew a prominent beard, and later began wearing a metallic helm cover over the right side of his head and face. During his time in Dressrosa, he covered his mask with a paper bag as a disguise.
Personality
Burgess is a boisterous and highly combative power-fighter who loves showing off his strength to crowds. He shows little care for collateral damage or bystanders during a rampage. Despite his reckless, reckless demeanor, he is intensely loyal to Marshall D. Teach. He also possesses a sneaky and persistent streak, capable of taunting opponents to create openings or surreptitiously stowing away on an enemy vessel while gravely injured to discover their hideout.
Abilities
Having eaten the Paramecia-type Strong-Strong Fruit (Riki Riki no Mi), Burgess possesses extreme superhuman physical strength, allowing him to effortlessly lift giant slabs of rock many times his size. He specializes in unarmored melee combat and can use both Armament and Observation Haki. His signature techniques include the Hado Elbow, a hardened elbow strike that emits massive shockwaves, and the Galleon Lariat. Additionally, he knows the method to steal Devil Fruit powers from defeated users.
Background
Burgess joined the Blackbeard Pirates in their early stages, taking part in events such as the conflict on Banaro Island, the raid on Impel Down, and the Summit War at Marineford. During the two-year timeskip, he became the Captain of the First Ship. In Dressrosa, he entered the Corrida Colosseum tournament under the alias Mr. Store to obtain the Flame-Flame Fruit, but was ultimately defeated by Sabo. Following the defeat, he secretly stowed away on a Revolutionary Army ship, enabling his crew to track down their headquarters in Baltigo.
Relationships
He holds deep respect and absolute loyalty toward Marshall D. Teach, stubbornly continuing to address him as "Captain" even after Teach became an Emperor. He developed a strong grudge against Sabo after being decisively beaten by him during the battle for the Flame-Flame Fruit. He acts in tandem with fellow Blackbeard Pirates executives, such as Laffitte and Shiryu, whom he contacts during reconnaissance operations.
Trivia
His distinctive laughing style, the title of "Champion," and his reliance on wrestling moves like the lariat heavily reference professional wrestling motifs.
