Overview

Gild Tesoro is the primary antagonist of the theatrical anime film One Piece Film: Gold and also appears in the TV special One Piece: Heart of Gold. Known as the Gold Emperor and the Monster of the New World, he is the owner and king of Gran Tesoro, a massive, world-recognized entertainment vessel and independent city. Holding twenty percent of the world's currency, Tesoro exerts immense political and financial influence over the World Government, the Marines, and the underworld, viewing money as the ultimate source of power.

Appearance

Gild Tesoro is a tall man standing nearly three meters high, featuring short green hair styled in a slicked-back manner. He wears a striking pink suit complemented by numerous gold accessories. While he wears gold rings on nearly every finger of both hands, his left ring finger is noticeably bare. On his back, he bears a large star-shaped brand designed to conceal a slave mark from his past.

Personality

Tesoro is a ruthless and arrogant tyrant who believes that money dictates all value in the world. Viewing himself as a god, he treats those without wealth with utter contempt, forcing them into brutal labor. Damaged by his past experiences, he has a strict, traumatized complex against anyone who laughs in his presence before he does, showing no leniency even to his own subordinates. Despite his smooth, theatrical demeanor, his true mannerisms are rough and violent when pushed.

Abilities

Tesoro possesses the Gol Gol no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to telekinetically reshape and manipulate any gold he has previously touched, though he cannot generate gold himself. Having awakened his powers, he can control the vast amounts of gold across his entire ten-kilometer ship and sense events taking place within it. He uses fine gold dust to enter people's bodies, allowing him to immobilize them by hardening it into solid gold armor or statues at will. In combat, he can form liquid gold tendrils, armors, and pilot a massive golden mecha known as Golden Tesoro, which can fire destructive light beams and unleash massive explosive strikes. His gold control is rendered ineffective when exposed to seawater.

Background

Born into poverty, Tesoro ran away from home at age twelve following his father's death. In his youth, he fell in love with a woman named Stella and worked tirelessly to buy her freedom. However, a Celestial Dragon purchased her instead, and Tesoro was enslaved alongside her after attempting to resist. Following Stella's death and years of cruelty in Mary Geoise, he escaped during Fisher Tiger's raid. Years later, he orchestrated an attack on an auction held by the Donquixote Pirates, stealing the Gol Gol no Mi. He progressively gathered crew members such as Mr. Tanaka, Dice, and Baccarat, built connections through a business pact with Donquixote Doflamingo, and built Gran Tesoro.

Relationships

Tesoro maintained a complex business arrangement with Donquixote Doflamingo, sharing a pragmatic connection despite mutual distrust. His past love, Stella, remains the primary influence behind his relentless drive for wealth. He commands key executives within his city, including Mr. Tanaka, Baccarat, and Dice. Tesoro harbors deep gratitude toward Fisher Tiger for freeing him from slavery. When interacting with Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates, he expresses amusement over their defeat of Doflamingo before eventually engaging them in total conflict.

Trivia

The name Tesoro comes from the Italian word for treasure or precious person. Due to his gratitude toward Fisher Tiger for liberating him from slavery, Tesoro strictly prohibited any form of discrimination against Fish-Men within Gran Tesoro. To help the film staff maintain a consistent understanding of his character, series creator Eiichiro Oda created detailed concept artwork outlining Tesoro's complete backstory during production.
