Overview

Borsalino, globally identified by his Marine moniker Kizaru, is an Admiral in the Marine Headquarters from the manga series One Piece. Serving as one of the highest military authorities in the World Government, he holds a position of supreme command, including overseeing the Marine Science Unit. Operating under his personal creed of "Unclear Justice," he carries out his duties with a detached professionalism that balances extreme ruthlessness with casual disinterest.

Appearance

Standing over three meters tall with a lean yet extremely tall frame, Borsalino has short black hair, facial hair, and yellow eyes covered by tinted teardrop sunglasses. He wears a yellow striped suit paired with a dress shirt and necktie, over which he drapes a Marine coat with decorative epaulettes over his shoulders. His suit pattern shifts subtle details after the series' time skip, and while he was a smoker during his time as a Vice Admiral, he rarely carries cigarettes in his current rank.

Personality

Borsalino possesses a notoriously relaxed, lighthearted demeanor that masks an unreadable mind. He speaks with a slow, drawn-out inflection and frequently shows little outward emotion, making him appear eerie even to his former instructor Zephyr. Embracing "Unclear Justice," he neither goes to the destructive extremes of Sakazuki nor shows the leniency of Kuzan. While he strictly fulfills his military duties to the point of referring to himself as a corporate slave, he is not entirely heartless and experiences deep inner emotional conflict when forced to target long-time acquaintances.

Abilities

Having eaten the Logia-type Pika Pika no Mi, Borsalino is a Light Human who can turn his body into light and manipulate it at will. This allows him to move and strike at lightspeed along straight paths, project devastating explosive laser beams from his limbs, materialize a massive sword of light called Ama no Murakumo, and rain down light projectiles using Yasakani no Magatama. He also uses Yata no Kagami to bounce light off surfaces for non-linear movement, can project light clones, and possesses high-level Armament and Observation Haki alongside exceptional physical martial arts skill.

Background

Hailing from the North Blue, Borsalino rose through the ranks of the Marines to become one of the three Admirals of Marine Headquarters. During the incident at the Sabaody Archipelago, he led forces to suppress high-bounty pirates and engaged Silvers Rayleigh in battle. He played a prominent role in the Paramount War at Marineford against the Whitebeard Pirates, emerging from the conflict virtually unscathed while his peers suffered serious injuries. Following the post-war leadership shakeup and battles among top officers, he remained the sole Admiral retaining his seat from the previous generation.

Relationships

Borsalino served alongside Sakazuki and Kuzan as part of the original trio of Marine Admirals. He maintains a long-standing personal relationship with the scientist Dr. Vegapunk and acted as a mentor to Sentomaru, the leader of the Marine Science Unit. He was trained by the former Marine Admiral Zephyr during his earlier military career, and he clashed directly in combat with Silvers Rayleigh, the former first mate of the Roger Pirates.

Trivia

Borsalino's physical design and facial features were modeled after the famous Japanese actor Kunie Tanaka, with his fictional birthday of November 23 sharing the actor's real-world birthdate. Additionally, his special techniques—such as Yata no Kagami, Ama no Murakumo, and Yasakani no Magatama—are named directly after the Three Sacred Treasures of Japanese mythology.
