Overview
Sabo is a prominent character in ONE PIECE who serves as the Chief of Staff and second-in-command of the Revolutionary Army. Born into royalty within the Goa Kingdom, he abandoned his privileged noble status to seek true freedom, forging an unbreakable bond of brotherhood with Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace. Known by the epithet "Flame Emperor," he plays a pivotal role in opposing the World Government while remaining fiercely devoted to supporting his surviving younger brother.
Appearance
Sabo is a young man with blonde hair and blue eyes. In his childhood, he had short hair and a chipped tooth, but as an adult, he wears his hair longer with bangs swept to the left to conceal a large burn scar around his left eye. His signature outfit includes a top hat adorned with goggles, a white ascot scarf, a blue shirt, a dark coat, and gloves. On his back, he carries a long iron pipe roughly equal to his height.
Personality
Sabo possesses a warm and thoughtful demeanor toward his allies and family. As a child, he often acted as the level-headed mediator between Portgas D. Ace and Monkey D. Luffy. Although he grew into a polite and dutiful revolutionary commander, he retains a reckless, free-spirited streak—frequently hanging up communications abruptly or mispronouncing allies' names, which draws reprimands from Koala and Hack. He is intensely overprotective of Luffy, declaring he would abandon any duty to help him. While fierce against hostiles, he refrains from unnecessary combat when fighting loses its purpose.
Abilities
Sabo is a Logia-type Devil Fruit user who consumed the Mera Mera no Mi, giving him the ability to turn his body into flames and manipulate massive fire, including Ace's signature Fire Fist attack. Prior to acquiring this power, he had already mastered Armament and Observation Haki by age seventeen. He utilizes Ryusoken, a martial art that leverages immense grip strength to strike the internal core of targets and shatter them. By imbuing his iron pipe and physical strikes with Armament Haki and his newly gained fire capabilities, he wields formidable combat power.
Background
Born to nobles in the Goa Kingdom, Sabo grew disgusted by his family's obsession with social status and fled home to live in the Gray Terminal. He met Portgas D. Ace and Monkey D. Luffy, sealing their bond as sworn brothers over cups of sake. After being forcibly brought back home and learning of a plot to burn the terminal, he set sail alone, only to have his vessel destroyed by a World Noble. Rescued by Monkey D. Dragon, he suffered severe amnesia and remained with the Revolutionary Army. Hearing of Ace's death at Marineford restored his memories, prompting his dramatic reunion with Luffy in Dressrosa.
Relationships
Sabo shares an eternal bond with his sworn brothers, Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace, demonstrating extreme love and protectiveness toward Luffy. Monkey D. Dragon saved his life and acts as his leader and mentor in the Revolutionary Army. He maintains a close working relationship with fellow revolutionaries Koala and Hack, though Koala often lectures him for acting independently. Conversely, he completely severed ties with his biological parents, Outlook III and Didit, as well as his adopted brother Stelly, due to their corrupt aristocratic ideals.
Trivia
Despite his noble upbringing, Sabo dislikes luxury foods like truffles and favors humble ramen as his favorite dish. His personal hobby is solo traveling, his designated image animal is the hawk, and his blood type is X.
