Overview
Sakazuki, widely known by his alias Akainu, is a high-ranking military commander in the manga series ONE PIECE and its surrounding franchise. Initially introduced as one of the three Marine Headquarters Admirals representing the World Government's ultimate fighting force, he subsequently ascended to the supreme position of Fleet Admiral following the Summit War of Marineford. Guided by an unyielding doctrine of "Absolute Justice," he is a stern and ruthless leader devoted to eradicating piracy and evil without compromise.
Appearance
Sakazuki is a tall, heavily built man standing over three meters high, featuring a crew cut and a stern face deeply creased with wrinkles around his brow. His body bears prominent tattoos, including a cherry blossom and flame motif across his left chest and forearm, a sword silhouette symbolizing justice on his right shoulder, and visible markings on the left side of his neck. Prior to his promotion, he wore a Marine cap, a red suit over a patterned shirt, black leather gloves, a pink flower on his lapel, and a Marine coat draped over his shoulders. As Fleet Admiral, his suit turns white, he grows facial hair around his mouth while constantly smoking cigars, and he exhibits a notched right ear along with a large scar stretching from his upper right torso to his cheek.
Personality
Speaking in a heavy Hiroshima dialect with the self-pronoun "washi," Sakazuki holds the radical belief that those who are not righteous possess no value in living. His adherence to "Absolute Justice" drives him to exterminate evil at the root, showing zero tolerance for deserting Marines or collateral damage if it ensures a threat's destruction. Though his terrifying demeanor causes even allies to tremble, many subordinates admire his single-minded dedication. In private, he enjoys cultivating a uniquely styled bonsai tree. Since being promoted to Fleet Admiral, he frequently suffers from administrative stress, frustrated by his inability to fight on the front lines while managing insubordinate Admirals, secretive World Government agents, and the demands of the World Nobles.
Abilities
Sakazuki wields the Logia-type Magu Magu no Mi, allowing him to turn his body into high-temperature magma and control molten rock. His heat easily vaporizes mountain-sized icebergs in seconds, possessing incinerating power superior even to fire-based abilities. He can alter his body volume, travel underground, fly briefly by ejecting magma downward, and permanently alter an island's climate through sustained battle. His notable techniques include "Dai Funka" (an enormous molten fist attack), "Ryusei Kazan" (a rain of volcanic rocks over a wide area), "Inugami Guren" (a canine-shaped lava assault), and "Meigo" (a thrusting lava strike capable of inflicting fatal tissue destruction). Furthermore, he possesses extreme physical toughness capable of withstanding massive impacts, alongside high-level Busoshoku and Kenbunshoku Haki.
Background
As a Marine Vice Admiral during the Buster Call on Ohara, Sakazuki commanded the destruction of an evacuation ship to ensure no scholar could escape. Later, as an Admiral during the Summit War of Marineford, he led the front lines against the Whitebeard Pirates. He provoked Portgas D. Ace into combat and struck him down fatally when Ace shielded Monkey D. Luffy. Following the war and Fleet Admiral Sengoku's resignation, Sakazuki fought a ten-day duel against his peer Kuzan on Punk Hazard to claim the top command. Winning the duel, he became Fleet Admiral, relocated Marine Headquarters to the New World, and organized a global military draft that brought new Admirals like Issho and Aramaki into the Marines.
Relationships
Sakazuki targeted Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace as dangerous bloodlines, ultimately killing Ace during the Summit War of Marineford. He held diametrically opposed views on justice from his fellow Admiral Kuzan (Aokiji), leading to their ten-day duel on Punk Hazard that resulted in Sakazuki's victory and Kuzan's departure from the Marines. Among his newly drafted Admirals, Issho (Fujitora) frequently opposes his authoritarian methods and policies regarding the Seven Warlords, whereas Aramaki (Ryokugyu) holds Sakazuki's fierce ideology in high regard. He succeeded Sengoku as Fleet Admiral and openly dismissed Edward Newgate (Whitebeard) as a relic of a defeated era during their war at Marineford.
Trivia
Sakazuki's visual appearance and demeanor are modeled after actor Bunta Sugawara. Creator Eiichiro Oda noted that if Sakazuki were the main character, his immense strength would cause the ONE PIECE manga to conclude within a single year. His favorite foods are white rice and hot chili peppers. While portrayed as a terrifyingly severe officer, he maintains a quiet personal hobby of caring for a uniquely shaped bonsai tree with foliage resting only on the tip of a straight trunk. Additionally, Oda stated in a Q&A that Sakazuki's real-world image profession would be a radio personality.
