Overview

Benn Beckman is the Vice Captain and first mate of the Red Hair Pirates in the series ONE PIECE. Serving as the trusted right-hand man to Captain Shanks, he provides tactical wisdom and organizational leadership to balance his captain's carefree nature. Known for his unwavering composure and exceptionally sharp strategic intellect, Beckman is a formidable pirate whose overwhelming combat strength and decisive judgment command intense caution even from top Marine commanders.

Appearance

Benn Beckman is a tall, muscular man with slicked-back grayish-white hair, facial stubble, and a prominent cross-shaped scar across his face. In his earlier years at Fousha Village, he had dark black hair and lacked the scar. He wears a black shirt beneath a shoulder-draped cloak decorated with a swirling botanical pattern, paired with earring accessories. He is consistently depicted smoking a cigarette and carrying a long rifle.

Personality

Beckman possesses a pragmatic, composed, and fearless demeanor, maintaining complete focus regardless of the severity of a crisis. Though he views Shanks as a demanding captain to manage, he remains deeply loyal, frequently handling tactical decisions and leading crew operations. While showing a supportive, older-brotherly concern toward young Monkey D. Luffy, he also possesses a surprising playboy side, actively pursuing romantic flings with women far more frequently than his captain.

Abilities

Beckman is exceptionally proficient in both Armament Haki and Observation Haki. In battle, he infuses his rifle bullets with Armament Haki to maximize armor-piercing damage, and his physical defense allows him to stop incoming bullets with his bare hands. His Observation Haki is sharp enough to anticipate and neutralize the light-speed movements of Marine Admiral Borsalino. When facing minor opponents, he refrains from firing, instead using his rifle as a heavy club or pressing his lit cigarette into their faces. He also demonstrated his deadly lethality by taking Eustass Kid's arm in the New World.

Background

Hailing from the North Blue, Beckman has served alongside Shanks since the early days of the Red Hair Pirates. Twelve years ago in Fousha Village, he befriended young Monkey D. Luffy; when mountain bandits kidnapped the boy, Beckman personally wiped out the entire squad of henchmen to resolve the situation. During the Summit War at Marineford, he arrived with his crew and held Admiral Borsalino at bay, securing safe passage for Luffy and helping end the war. Throughout their New World voyages, he continues to lead victories against rival crews while guiding the crew alongside Shanks.

Relationships

Shanks relies on Beckman as his trusted vice captain, addressing him affectionately as Beck while leaning on his strategic wisdom. Monkey D. Luffy remembers him from his youth in Fousha Village as a stern yet caring figure who offered worldly guidance. Marine Admiral Borsalino (Kizaru) was personally held at gunpoint and temporarily restrained by Beckman at Marineford. Eustass Kid shares a bitter history with Beckman, having lost his arm to him during a past conflict in the New World.

Trivia

Early in the serialization of ONE PIECE, author Eiichiro Oda noted in a volume SBS that Beckman possessed the highest IQ of any character introduced up to that point. Additionally, despite his stoic and refined demeanor, official supplementary materials reveal that he is a persistent playboy who pursues female companions far more actively than Shanks, maintaining a surprisingly extensive romantic history.
