Overview
Bellemere is a supporting character from the manga and anime series ONE PIECE. A former officer in the Marines, she later settled in Cocoyasi Village on the Konomi Islands in the East Blue to run a tangerine orchard. She served as the adoptive mother of Nami and Nojiko, raising both girls with deep maternal affection despite facing severe financial hardship.
Appearance
Bellemere is a tall woman standing 186 cm. She has black eyes and red hair styled into a ponytail with shaved sides. Her standard attire consists of a shirt covered by a yellow apron. She is a habitual smoker and is almost always depicted with a cigarette in her mouth.
Personality
Retaining some of her former delinquent roughness, Bellemere could be quick-tempered, hot-headed, and surprisingly brash. Beneath her tough exterior, however, she possessed deep maternal devotion and strong principles. She was fiercely protective of her daughters, routinely eating only tangerines herself so they could have full meals, and instilled in them the resolve to remain strong and never resent the era into which they were born.
Abilities
During her time in the Marines, Bellemere achieved the rank of officer (Second Lieutenant or higher), earning the right to wear the white coat emblazoned with 'Justice,' indicating combat proficiency well above that of average soldiers. She displayed familiarity with firearms, using a rifle in battle. Aside from her combat skills, she was proficient in tailoring her daughters' clothes and cooking meals centered around tangerines.
Background
After leaving Cocoyasi Village as a youth, Bellemere joined the Marines and climbed through the ranks. During a devastating battle in the Oykot Kingdom, a near-fatal injury left her on the brink of death until she encountered the young orphans Nojiko and baby Nami. Inspired to protect them, she resigned from service and returned home to raise them as her own. Years later, when the Arlong Pirates invaded the village and demanded a tax per head, Bellemere gave up her limited money for her daughters' lives rather than deny her family ties, resulting in her being shot to death by Arlong.
Relationships
Bellemere was the adoptive mother of Nami and Nojiko, cherishing them as her true daughters. She maintained a close, supportive relationship with Genzo, the local village officer, as well as the rest of the Cocoyasi community. Her deadly adversaries were the Arlong Pirates, leading to her tragic murder at the hands of their captain, Arlong.
Trivia
Her name, Bellemere, is derived from the French term 'belle-mère,' which translates to 'stepmother' or 'mother-in-law.' Additionally, her unique hair pattern with shaved sides is officially titled 'Women Need Guts.'
