Overview
Shiryu, also known as "Shiryu of the Rain," is a major antagonist in "ONE PIECE." He serves as the Captain of the Second Ship of the Blackbeard Pirates. A towering, ruthless swordsman, he originally held the position of Head Jailer at the underwater prison Impel Down before defecting to join Marshall D. Teach's crew.
Appearance
Shiryu is a giant man standing 340 cm tall, featuring sharp eyes, a large nose, and a broad, long chin with no beard. He is frequently seen smoking a cigar. He wears his former head jailer attire consisting of a long jacket, gloves, long boots, and a peaked cap with earflaps, topped with a coat bearing the kanji for "Prison" draped over his shoulders like a cape. His outfit features skull emblems instead of his former prison badges.
Personality
Shiryu possesses a bloodthirsty and sadistic nature. He views killing prisoners as mere entertainment or a way to blow off steam, lacking any remorse for his actions. Disillusioned with his past role, he seeks thrill and aligns himself with powerful figures who offer a path to chaos.
Abilities
Shiryu is a master swordsman who wields a long nodachi named "Raiu," using swift draw-and-strike techniques. He gained the power of the Clear-Clear Fruit (Suke Suke no Mi), a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, allowing him to render himself and anything he touches completely invisible, which he uses to execute devastating ambush attacks.
Background
Formerly the Head Jailer of Impel Down, Shiryu was sentenced to death and locked away in Level 6 due to his repeated massacres of inmates. During the massive prison break, he was temporarily released to help restore order. Instead, he betrayed the institution, slaughtered his fellow guards, provided an antidote to the dying Blackbeard Pirates, and joined Marshall D. Teach. He later became one of the Ten Titanic Captains.
Relationships
Shiryu joined Marshall D. Teach after finding him to be the leader he was waiting for. At Impel Down, he was considered the equal of Chief Warden Magellan, with the two serving as the facility's dual pillars. He murdered Absalom to steal his Devil Fruit power, and later inflicted a severe wound on Marine legend Monkey D. Garp while Garp protected Koby.
Trivia
His sword, Raiu, features a square tsuba, a red hilt, and a scabbard patterned in red and white resembling blood spatter. In official illustrations highlighting the second-in-command figures of major pirate crews, Shiryu is featured alongside swordsmen such as Roronoa Zoro.
