Overview

Doc Q is a character in the manga and anime series ONE PIECE. Known by the moniker "Death God," he serves as the doctor for the Blackbeard Pirates led by Marshall D. Teach, as well as the captain of the fleet's ninth ship. As one of the original core members who joined Teach early in his journey, he carries a high bounty. Despite being a medical practitioner, Doc Q suffers from a chronically frail condition and relies on his equally sickly horse, Stronger, for mobility. He possesses a sinister outlook on life, evaluating the worth of human existence entirely by an individual's luck.

Appearance

Doc Q is a gaunt, tall man standing 342 centimeters tall, appearing much older than his actual age of twenty-eight. He features unkempt long hair, facial hair, a large nose, a pirate hat, and a coat. Due to his naturally frail constitution, he looks sickly, appearing perpetually on the verge of collapsing while frequently coughing up blood. Because moving on foot is difficult for him, he travels everywhere mounted on his equally feeble horse, Stronger.

Personality

Doc Q holds a morbid mindset, evaluating human worth strictly by an individual's luck and believing destiny is entirely predetermined. For entertainment, he carries a basket mixed with normal apples and explosive-laden ones, offering them to strangers in a dangerous game of chance to test their fate. Despite his sinister antics and disregard for innocent life, his medical abilities are genuinely acknowledged by his peers. When commanded to treat heavily injured crewmates, he performs his duties reliably, earning trust as the crew's doctor.

Abilities

Doc Q ate the Sick-Sick Fruit, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that turns him into a contagious human capable of producing and spreading various illnesses, whether real or fabricated. He can inflict conditions such as a gender-altering disease that spreads via physical contact. However, if a victim uses immense Haki to forge antibodies, those antibodies will likewise spread and neutralize the disease. In combat, he uses a large T-shaped scythe and throws explosive apples in an attack known as Apple Bomb. Despite his frail health, he retains enough physical power to row a giant log boat.

Background

Originating from the North Blue, Doc Q joined the Blackbeard Pirates during the crew's early formation. At Mock Town on Jaya, after falling off his horse, he offered apples to Roronoa Zoro and his companions to test their fate. He later joined the pursuit of the Straw Hat Pirates toward Skypiea, which was cut short by the Knock Up Stream. During the invasion of Impel Down, he was rendered helpless by Magellan's venom but was saved by Shiryu's antidote. At Marineford, he participated in the group assault that ended Edward Newgate's life using his scythe. During the New World arc, he became the captain of the ninth ship and ambushed Trafalgar Law's crew on Winner Island.

Relationships

Doc Q is intensely loyal to his captain, Marshall D. Teach, having served alongside him since the crew's inception. He shares a deep connection with his horse, Stronger; despite both being chronically ill and frequently tumbling over, Doc Q relies on the animal for transport. He works closely with Jesus Burgess, rowing boats together and taking charge of his treatment when Burgess suffers severe injuries. Shiryu saved his life by providing an antidote during their escape from Impel Down. On Winner Island, he directly engaged Trafalgar Law in battle by targeting him with his disease-spreading powers.

Trivia

Doc Q's favorite food is apples that do not contain explosives. His birthday on October 18 is derived from a numerical Japanese wordplay on his name. Because he is a villainous doctor who trivializes life and spreads sickness, fans frequently contrast him with Tony Tony Chopper, the Straw Hat Pirates' doctor who strives to become a universal cure, leading to widespread fan anticipation of an eventual clash between the two.
