Overview
Vasco Shot is a character from the manga and anime series ONE PIECE. He serves as an executive of the Blackbeard Pirates and holds the position of captain for their 8th ship, sailing aboard the Saber of Xebec. Widely known by his epithet Heavy Drinker, he was formerly incarcerated in Level 6, the deepest floor of the underwater prison Impel Down. After being freed by Marshall D. Teach, he joined the crew as one of its core members.
Appearance
Standing at 573 cm tall, Vasco Shot possesses a massive body and dresses in a colorful outfit resembling a jester, topped with a distinctive jester hat. His most prominent facial features are a perpetually flushed, drunken face and an exceptionally large, sausage-like nose. He consistently carries a massive liquor gourd on his back. Following the two-year time skip, he gains a star tattoo on the left side of his forehead, along with a sash belt across his chest and a necklace.
Personality
As expected of a former prisoner from Level 6 of Impel Down, Vasco Shot is an inherently violent and bloodthirsty individual who feels no remorse over taking human lives. He has a severe addiction to alcohol, especially Shaoxing wine, and remains in a state of heavy intoxication at all times. He exhibits a distinctive laugh and has a habit of concluding his speech with a characteristic rhetorical inquiry, maintaining a cheerful yet sinister demeanor even when proposing extreme violence.
Abilities
Vasco Shot possesses the powers of the Gabu Gabu no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that turns him into a Liquor Human. This fruit allows him to generate and spew alcohol from his mouth, which he can then ignite with a snap of his fingers to create destructive fire attacks. His primary fighting technique, Shugoroppu (Liquor Furnace Fire), involves exhaling highly flammable liquor and lighting it to shoot out a massive blaze.
Background
Vasco Shot was originally locked away in Level 6 of the underwater prison Impel Down due to his extreme crimes. During the break-in staged by Marshall D. Teach, he survived the battle royal among the prisoners and was recruited into the Blackbeard Pirates. He resurfaced during the Marineford Summit War, participating in the group attack that ended the life of Edward Newgate. Later operating in the New World, he joined Teach's invasion of Amazon Lily and subsequently fought on the island of Hachinosu against the Marine rescue team led by Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp.
Relationships
Vasco Shot serves as a high-ranking officer under Marshall D. Teach and shares a strong connection with fellow Level 6 escapees including Catarina Devon, Avalo Pizarro, and Sanjuan Wolf. During the Summit War, he joined his crewmates in slaying Edward Newgate. At Amazon Lily, he was subdued and petrified by Boa Hancock. Later during the battle at Hachinosu, his fire techniques were turned against his own side by Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, causing widespread damage to their stronghold.
Trivia
During the 2021 global ONE PIECE character popularity poll (WT100), Vasco Shot achieved a surprising temporary ranking of 1st place in North America and 2nd place in Europe during early updates, astonishing fans given his limited appearances. Additionally, his name Vasco is a Japanese numerical wordplay on his birthday, August 5th (8 for ba and 5 for ko).
