Overview
Nojiko is a character from the manga and anime series ONE PIECE. Residing in Cocoyasi Village, she is the adoptive older sister of Nami, the navigator for the Straw Hat Pirates. Raised by the former Marine Bellemere, Nojiko serves as a steadfast source of emotional support and an understanding confidante for Nami during her years of suffering under Arlong's tyrannical rule.
Appearance
Nojiko is distinguished by her light blue hair, plump lips, and a noticeably tanned skin tone in the animated adaptation. To share Nami's emotional burden, she bears a tattoo on her right shoulder matching her sister's style. She also wears a golden bracelet that is later passed on to Nami. Following the two-year time skip, she lets her hair grow longer and adopts a more curvaceous figure.
Personality
Nojiko possesses a resilient, practical, and highly empathetic nature. Understanding the true motive behind Nami's apparent betrayal of the village, she secretly offers her sister shelter and emotional warmth. She strongly dislikes reckless acts of martyrdom, valuing instead the strength to endure immense hardship for the sake of the future.
Abilities
While not a combatant or possessor of special combat abilities, Nojiko is skilled in agriculture, taking over the maintenance and cultivation of the mikan orchard left behind by her adoptive mother Bellemere.
Background
Orphaned by war in the Oykot Kingdom, Nojiko was found as a child holding the infant Nami by Marine officer Bellemere, who brought them both to Cocoyasi Village and raised them as her own. Their peaceful life was shattered when the Arlong Pirates invaded and killed Bellemere. When Nami was forced to join Arlong's crew to buy back the village, Nojiko maintained a public distance while secretly supporting her sister and tending to Bellemere's mikan orchard. She later revealed Nami's true ordeal to the Straw Hat Pirates, prompting them to liberate the island.
Relationships
Nojiko shares a deep sisterly bond with her adoptive sister, Nami, acting as her ultimate pillar of emotional strength. Bellemere was her beloved adoptive mother who rescued and raised her. She maintains a close relation with Genzo and the residents of Cocoyasi Village, and she entrusted Nami's freedom to Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates after telling them the truth about Nami's past.
Trivia
Her name is derived from the yellow bunting, a species of bird known in Japanese as 'nojiko'. When Nami's original Japanese voice actress went on maternity leave during the anime's production, Nojiko's voice actress stepped in to temporarily voice Nami.
