Megalo

Overview

Megalo is a character appearing in the manga and anime series ONE PIECE. He is a giant pet shark owned by Princess Shirahoshi of the Ryugu Kingdom, functioning as her loyal animal companion and constant presence at her side. Introduced prominently during the Fish-Man Island arc, he serves both as an endearing mascot figure and as a vital character holding key historical secrets of the realm while offering crucial assistance to Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates during their stay.

Appearance

Megalo is a giant shark measuring fifty meters in height. He features a broad mouth lined with sharp teeth, alongside expressive visual reactions such as popping eyes and heavy sweating during moments of extreme panic. Across his torso, he wears a striped t-shirt produced under the famous Criminal fashion brand.

Personality

Despite his intimidating physique as a massive marine predator, Megalo possesses a very gentle and faint-hearted personality. He is easily frightened and tends to display his emotions openly through exaggerated panic whenever placed under stress. He is fiercely devoted to Princess Shirahoshi, showing deep compassion and emotional endurance by carrying painful memories for years solely to protect her feelings from malice and hatred.

Abilities

Megalo utilizes his massive fifty-meter physique to swim efficiently underwater. He possesses a remarkably spacious mouth capable of concealing and transporting an adult human, a capacity he used to swallow Monkey D. Luffy whole and carry him safely past guards. While his communication is primarily restricted to shark calls sounding like Sha-sha, he eventually gains the vocal ability to articulate Monkey D. Luffy's name.

Background

Ten years prior to the events on Fish-Man Island, Megalo was the sole eyewitness to the assassination of Queen Otohime at the hands of Hody Jones. To prevent Princess Shirahoshi from harboring hatred, he kept the identity of the killer a secret for a decade. Throughout the ten years Princess Shirahoshi spent confined inside the Hard-Shell Tower, Megalo remained her constant companion and sole listener. He later assisted Monkey D. Luffy by smuggling him out of the tower inside his mouth, aiding the Straw Hat Pirates during the conflict on Fish-Man Island.

Relationships

Megalo maintains an exceptionally close bond with Princess Shirahoshi, having served as her sole confidant and devoted pet throughout her long confinement in the Hard-Shell Tower. His relationship with Hody Jones is defined by the dark secret he witnessed when Hody assassinated Queen Otohime. He also forms a warm acquaintance with Monkey D. Luffy, whom he agrees to carry inside his mouth, leading him to eventually learn how to speak Luffy's name aloud.

Trivia

The striped top worn by Megalo belongs to the Criminal apparel brand, created by the sea star designer Pappag. His signature vocal utterance, transcribed as Sha-sha, represents the standardized sound effect for shark calls within the setting of the series.
