Overview
Koza is a supporting character from the manga and anime series One Piece. Originating from the Alabasta Kingdom in the Grand Line, he is a childhood friend and big-brother figure to Princess Nefertari Vivi. During the Alabasta Arc, he served as the leader of the Rebel Army, having lost faith in the monarchy due to secret orchestrations by the criminal syndicate Baroque Works. Following the war's conclusion and resolution of the misunderstandings, he eventually stepped into the role of Alabasta's Minister of the Environment.
Appearance
Koza is a young man with short blonde hair and sideburns. He has a distinctive facial scar across his forehead and eye, which he received during his childhood while protecting Vivi from kidnappers.
Personality
Koza is a passionate and responsible leader who genuinely cares for his homeland and its people. Though forced to command an army, he despises violence and values human life, straightforwardly telling recruits that nobody truly wants to fight or die. Originally holding immense respect for the monarchy, his intense empathy for the suffering populace led him to a tragic distrust of the king. Upon realizing he had been deceived, he demonstrated clear integrity by immediately attempting to halt the bloodshed.
Abilities
Koza possesses martial skills from training in swordplay during his youth, capable of wielding clubs and blades. As a commander, his primary strength lies in his charismatic leadership, which allowed him to organize and lead a massive rebel force against the royal army.
Background
In his childhood, Koza led a group of local kids called the Suna Suna Clan and formed a strong bond with Princess Vivi. He later moved with his father Toto to develop the oasis town of Yuba. When severe drought struck the region due to Crocodile's secret interventions, Koza grew disillusioned with King Cobra and formed the Rebel Army. He led a massive assault on the capital of Alabarna, but upon penetrating the palace, he uncovered the enemy's scheme and attempted to stop the battle. After the conflict, he reconciled with the king and worked to rebuild Yuba, later becoming the Minister of the Environment.
Relationships
He shares a close, sibling-like bond with his childhood friend, Nefertari Vivi. His father is Toto, a dedicated citizen who stayed behind in Yuba, and his uncle is Goro. He initially respected King Nefertari Cobra before being tricked into rebellion, later restoring their mutual trust. In his youth, he received swordplay lessons from Chaka, the captain of the Royal Guard.
Trivia
Despite being one of the central figures driving the narrative of the Alabasta Arc, Koza is notable for resolving his storyline with virtually no direct interaction with Monkey D. Luffy or the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates.
