Overview

Yokozuna is a character from the manga and anime series One Piece. He is a giant frog originally kept as a pet by the legendary shipwright Tom in Water 7. Named after the highest rank in sumo wrestling, he plays a supportive role in the story, notably aiding the protagonists during the events of the Enies Lobby arc.

Appearance

Yokozuna is a frog of immense physical proportions. He wears a traditional sumo belt (mawashi) around his waist. His entire body is heavily marked with numerous scars accumulated over years of intense physical collisions.

Personality

Driven by intense loyalty and a profound desire to protect those he holds dear, Yokozuna demonstrates immense brave determination. The shock of past tragic losses instilled in him a stubborn resolve to become strong enough to shield his allies. He exhibits a dependable, self-sacrificing nature when fighting alongside companions.

Abilities

Yokozuna possesses the ability to swim rapidly through the sea using a human-like freestyle crawl stroke taught to him by Franky. He exhibits immense physical strength and durability, allowing him to challenge a moving sea train head-on. In battle, he employs sumo techniques such as powerful open-palm strikes (harite).

Background

Formerly living alongside the shipwright Tom in Water 7, Yokozuna was deeply traumatized eight years ago by Tom's arrest and Franky's apparent death. Vowing to grow strong enough to protect those he cared about, he established a daily routine of physically confronting the sea train Puffing Tom in the ocean. During the Enies Lobby crisis, he joined forces with the Straw Hat Pirates and their allies to defend the court building, eventually retiring his dangerous daily routine to live peacefully in Water 7.

Relationships

Yokozuna was deeply attached to his late owner, Tom. He shares a close, family-like bond with Franky, who taught him how to swim freestyle, as well as Iceburg. During the assault on Enies Lobby, he fought side by side with the Straw Hat Pirates, the Galley-La Company foremen, the Franky Family, and the giants Oimo and Kashii.

Trivia

His name is derived directly from yokozuna, the supreme rank achievable in professional sumo wrestling.
