Overview

Sengoku is a character in One Piece who served as the Fleet Admiral of Navy Headquarters before stepping down to become an Inspector General. Known by epithets such as Sengoku the Buddha and the Resourceful General, he was the supreme strategist who commanded the Marines during major global events like the Summit War. Following his resignation from the supreme command, he assumed an advisory role focused on guiding the new generation of Marines.

Appearance

Standing nearly three meters tall, Sengoku is a large-framed elderly man with an afro, a long braided goatee, and round black-rimmed glasses. In the first half of the story, he had black hair and wore a white high-neck jacket adorned with medals and a sash, a Marine cap featuring a large seagull ornament, and a white coat inscribed with 'Justice' on the back, accompanied by a small white goat. Two years later, his hair turned completely white with enlarged sideburns, and he shed his uniform cap for a short-sleeved shirt and shorts with sockless leather shoes, while continuing to drape his Marine coat over his shoulders. He is also seen accompanied by a gorilla.

Personality

During his tenure as Fleet Admiral, Sengoku maintained an uncompromising and dutiful disposition, separating personal emotion from his orders under his ideology of Reigning Justice. As an outstanding tactician, he prioritized civilian safety and expressed open anger whenever government decisions placed politics above innocent lives. After stepping down from command, the removal of his heavy responsibilities revealed a much more relaxed, cheerful, and lighthearted persona. He frequently laughs, teases his colleagues, and eats rice crackers on duty. Beneath his authoritative demeanor lies a deeply compassionate nature, highlighted by the sorrow he felt over the tragic loss of someone he raised like his own son.

Abilities

Sengoku possesses the power of the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Daibutsu, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that enables him to transform into a massive golden Buddha. Upon transforming, his body expands to giant proportions while emitting a bright metallic glow, and his hair changes into fine bead-like curls. In combat, he uses his massive physique for hand-to-hand fighting and can discharge devastating shockwaves directly from his palms. Additionally, he is proficient in Observation Haki and Armament Haki, and is officially recognized as possessing Conqueror's Haki.

Background

Sengoku rose through the Marine hierarchy alongside Monkey D. Garp and Tsuru before the Great Pirate Era, engaging in famous clashes against legendary figures such as Gol D. Roger and Shiki. As an Admiral, he joined Garp in defeating Shiki after the Roger Pirates' disbandment and was involved in major operations like the Ohara Incident. Decades ago, he took in the orphaned Donquixote Rosinante and raised him to be a Marine operative, later mourning his death during a covert mission. As Fleet Admiral, Sengoku led the entire Marine defense during the Summit War at Marineford. Disillusioned with World Government policy following the war, he stepped down to become Inspector General, later assisting with high-profile prisoner escorts and educating younger Marines on historical events.

Relationships

Monkey D. Garp and Tsuru are his lifelong peers and trusted allies from his early military days; despite constantly being exasperated by Garp's free-spirited nature, Sengoku holds absolute trust in him. He harbored parental affection for Donquixote Rosinante, and upon encountering Trafalgar D. Water Law years later, he shared memories of Rosinante's love before choosing not to arrest him. Sengoku recommended Kuzan as his successor for Fleet Admiral, and he now takes amusements in teasing Sakazuki about the pressures of leading the Marines. He agreed to remain in the military as an Inspector General at the request of Commander-in-Chief Kong.

Trivia

His favorite food is Marine rice crackers (okaki), which he routinely munches on out of a bag during conversations following his step down from the Fleet Admiral position. His birthday, May 9, is derived from a Japanese numerical wordplay on his name (Sen-go-ku, representing 5 and 9). Official character databooks identify him as the first Marine character explicitly confirmed to possess Conqueror's Haki.
