Overview
The Thousand Sunny is the second pirate ship used by the Straw Hat Pirates in the One Piece franchise, serving as the successor to the Going Merry. Designed by Franky and constructed with the help of Iceburg and the Galley-La Company shipwrights, it is the crew's first custom-built vessel. Its name reflects the wish for the ship to cheerfully traverse a thousand harsh seas like the sun.
Appearance
The Thousand Sunny is a brigantine-rigged sloop measuring 39 meters in length and 56 meters in height, constructed using the rare and durable Treasure Tree Adam. It features a prominent lion figurehead whose eyes serve as searchlights called Sunny Ganriki, while its front paws function as anchors. The main deck is covered in lawn grass and equipped with a slide, a swing, Nami's transplanted mikan trees, and secondary cannons. Inside, the vessel contains a spacious kitchen with a locked refrigerator, a library, an iron-plated training gym, a bathroom with a tub, a large aquarium room for storing live fish, and a hanging cage.
Personality
Although a ocean vessel, the Thousand Sunny inherits the spirit of its predecessor, the Going Merry, and is beloved as an indispensable companion by the Straw Hat Pirates. It possesses remarkable resilience, withstanding severe natural hazards and intense attacks while providing a vibrant, comfortable environment that minimizes stress for its crew during long journeys.
Abilities
The vessel utilizes cola as its primary fuel source to operate various specialized pneumatic mechanisms. Its stern features the Coup de Burst, an emergency propulsion system that uses compressed air to launch the ship roughly one kilometer through the air. The lion figurehead houses the Chicken Voyage to move the ship backward, and the powerful Gaon Cannon, which unleashes a devastating blast of compressed air from the lion's mouth. It also uses the Rabbit Screw at the hull for quick escapes. Furthermore, the ship incorporates the Soldier Dock System, a rotating paddle-and-vehicle bay containing the Support Paddle, Shiro Mokuba I, Mini Merry II, Shark Submerge III, Kurosai FR-U4, and Brachio Tank 5.
Background
The ship was built in Water 7 over several days by Franky, Iceburg, the Galley-La Company foremen, and Yokozuna, using wood from the Treasure Tree Adam that Franky purchased with two hundred million beri. After being presented to the Straw Hat Pirates, it carried them through numerous dangerous regions including Thriller Bark, Sabaody Archipelago, Fish-Man Island, Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, Whole Cake Island, Wano Country, and Egghead. During the crew's two-year separation, the ship was steadfastly protected from Marines and bounty hunters by Duval, Hatchan, and Bartholomew Kuma.
Relationships
Designed and built by Franky alongside Iceburg, Peepley Lulu, Tilestone, Paulie, and Yokozuna, the vessel is steered primarily by Franky and Jinbe. It serves as the home for Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Tony Tony Chopper, Nico Robin, and Brook, with Usopp frequently assisting Franky in maintaining the ship. The ship's lion figurehead was humorously mistaken for a flower by Nico Robin and a sunflower by Tilestone.
Trivia
Before Iceburg suggested its official name, the crew proposed various bizarre titles, such as Luffy's Dango Gorilla Lion, Zoro's Master Lionel, Sanji's Monsieur Sunflower, and Robin's Ankokumaru. In the theatrical film ONE PIECE STAMPEDE, an alternate Flying Model appearance inspired by an emperor penguin was introduced.
