Overview

Silvers Rayleigh, also known as the "Dark King" or the "Right Hand of the Pirate King," is a prominent character in the manga and anime series ONE PIECE. He served as the first mate and second-in-command of the Roger Pirates under Gol D. Roger. Following the crew's dissolution, he retired to the Sabaody Archipelago to work as a ship-coating mechanic. Despite lacking Devil Fruit powers, he remains one of the world's most powerful figures and later serves as the mentor who trains Monkey D. Luffy in the fundamentals of Haki.

Appearance

Rayleigh is an elderly man in his late seventies with a muscular build, long white hair, a white chin beard, and round eyeglasses. A single vertical scar runs across his right eye, and several stitched scars are visible on his body, including his left chest and right arm. In his youth, he had slicked-back blonde hair and a distinct black beard featuring four vertical bar-like lines.

Personality

During his time with the Roger Pirates, Rayleigh was the pragmatic and level-headed heart of the crew, often maintaining order. Despite his serious side, he possesses a surprisingly relaxed and carefree temperament, taking pleasure in gambling and amusement parks. He occasionally engages in reckless antics, such as allowing himself to be captured for auction to rob his buyers. Overall, he is a friendly and open-minded individual who evaluates people without prejudice and takes genuine delight in observing the rise of the new generation.

Abilities

Rayleigh is a master swordsman and hand-to-hand combatant who relies entirely on physical strength and spiritual energy rather than Devil Fruit abilities. Even in his advanced age, he possesses enough physical power to deflect cannonballs by hand, swim across the dangerous Calm Belt, and fight evenly against Marine Admirals. He has mastered all three types of Haki: a highly advanced Observation Haki capable of sensing life force over vast distances, an exceptional Armament Haki that allows for non-contact force deflection and internal damage, and a powerful Conqueror's Haki capable of instantly incapacitating massive creatures.

Background

In his youth, after losing his home to a fire, Rayleigh met Gol D. Roger and joined him to start a pirate crew. As the first mate of the Roger Pirates, he traveled the world and helped conquer the Grand Line before the crew was officially disbanded. Following Roger's execution, he settled on the Sabaody Archipelago and learned ship coating. Years later, he crossed paths with Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates, ultimately choosing to mentor Luffy on Rusukaina Island during a two-year training period.

Relationships

Rayleigh shared an intense bond of mutual trust with his former captain, Gol D. Roger. He currently resides with Shakuyaku (Shakky), who acts as his common-law wife. He maintains a close friendship with the fish-man Hatchan, who saved his life when Rayleigh was shipwrecked in his youth. Additionally, he, Shakky, and Nyon protected the Gorgon sisters—including Boa Hancock—after their escape from slavery. He holds high expectations for Monkey D. Luffy, whom he mentored and sees as carrying Roger's spirit.

Trivia

His name is derived from the English explorer and privateer Sir Walter Raleigh, while his surname reference to "silver" complements Roger's gold theme. Within the story, he is recognized as one of the extremely few living individuals who possess complete knowledge of the Void Century and the Will of D.
