Overview

Thatch was a pirate who served as the 4th Division Commander and head chef of the Whitebeard Pirates in the series ONE PIECE. Operating aboard the Moby Dick, he led the fleet's galley team and managed food supplies for the massive force commanded by Edward Newgate. After accidentally discovering the rare Dark-Dark Fruit, he was betrayed and killed by his subordinate Marshall D. Teach. His untimely death set off a fatal chain of events that reshaped the world, acting as the catalyst for the Marineford War.

Appearance

Thatch is distinguished visually by his brown pompadour-style hair paired with a neat goatee on his chin.

Personality

Thatch was a remarkably warm, approachable, and considerate individual. When Portgas D. Ace was brought aboard and remained hostile, Thatch was the first to extend casual friendliness, serving as his caretaker and listening to his concerns. He extended absolute trust to anyone accepted onto the ship, avoiding unnecessary restraints. Despite the heavy duties of feeding a rowdy crew, he kept a lighthearted nature and possessed a playful, flirtatious side, such as jokingly asking a girl he rescued to marry him.

Abilities

Although he was not a Devil Fruit user, Thatch was a skilled dual-blade swordsman who fought using a pair of single-edged swords resembling long kitchen knives. Fitting for a division commander, he was a powerful combatant proficient in both Busoshoku Haki and Kenbunshoku Haki. Additionally, he was a master culinary expert capable of satisfying the demanding appetites of crew members like Edward Newgate and Marshall D. Teach.

Background

Hailing from the North Blue, Thatch joined the Whitebeard Pirates and rose to become the 4th Division Commander and head chef. Under his leadership, the 4th Division took charge of the fleet's food preparation. When Portgas D. Ace joined the crew, Thatch was assigned as his primary guardian. His fate changed drastically when he randomly found an unidentified Devil Fruit. Following crew custom, he kept it, unaware it was the Dark-Dark Fruit coveted by Marshall D. Teach. Teach murdered Thatch to steal the fruit and fled, inciting Ace's pursuit and leading directly to the Paramount War.

Relationships

Thatch held great affection for his captain, Edward Newgate, constantly preparing meals for him. He developed a close relationship with Portgas D. Ace, guiding him through his initial days on the ship. He also trusted his subordinate Marshall D. Teach as a close comrade, completely unaware of Teach's true motives until Teach betrayed and killed him. Furthermore, he maintained a friendly relation with Jinbe, who deeply respected Thatch for his thoughtful understanding of Jinbe's delicate position as a Warlord of the Sea.

Trivia

His name is derived from Edward Thatch, one of the famous real-world aliases used by the historical pirate Blackbeard. Despite appearing almost exclusively in short flashback scenes, his tragic death serves as the fundamental catalyst for the overarching storyline of ONE PIECE, earning him enduring popularity among readers.
