Overview
Gecko Moria is the captain of the Thriller Bark Pirates and a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea in the manga series ONE PIECE. Originally leading the Gecko Pirates in the New World, he later relocated to the Florian Triangle in the Grand Line, operating from the colossal island-ship Thriller Bark. Harnessing the powers of the Paramecia-type Shadow-Shadow Fruit, he severs the shadows of living victims and implants them into corpses to build an obedient zombie army, seeking to achieve his dream of becoming the Pirate King.
Appearance
Gecko Moria has a devilish look with extremely pale skin, small horns, sharp fang-like teeth, spiky reddish-purple hair, and X-shaped stitches running from his forehead down his neck. He possesses an abnormally long neck, short legs, and a massive, pear-shaped obese body. His attire consists of gothic fashion reminiscent of bats and Dracula, including a coat, gloves, a white ascot, and a bracelet. During the Summit War, he wore a blue hooded robe over his outfit. Decades earlier, he was slim with a pointed chin and punk style, lacking his elongated neck and forehead stitching.
Personality
Defined by supreme sloth, Gecko Moria lives by the motto of relying entirely on others, preferring to command subordinates rather than exert effort himself. Though he was once ambitious and highly self-confident in his youth, the tragic annihilation of his original crew in the New World left him deeply traumatized. This experience convinced him that living crewmates lead to painful loss, inspiring his obsession with replaceable zombie soldiers. Despite his arrogant, lazy, and easily angered exterior, he is genuinely devoted to his crew and possesses the true resolve of a pirate commander, willing to enter hostile territory alone to rescue his allies.
Abilities
Gecko Moria wields the Paramecia-type Shadow-Shadow Fruit, allowing him to control shadows at will. He can manifest his own shadow to fight, swap places with it, or shape it into weapons and boxes. Using giant scissors, he severs and steals shadows from living targets, implanting them into corpses to generate zombies that inherit the original owners' skills and personalities. Moria can also absorb stolen shadows into his own body to immensely boost his physical strength and size; however, overimbibing weakens his control, causing shadows to escape upon receiving severe impacts. Zombies are vulnerable to purification via salt or seawater, and burning their bodies releases the trapped shadows.
Background
Decades ago, Gecko Moria led the Gecko Pirates into the New World and earned fame by clashing with the Emperor Kaido. After his entire crew was wiped out by Kaido, Moria survived alone and retreated to the Florian Triangle in Paradise. Operating aboard the giant island-ship Thriller Bark, he spent years stealing shadows to rebuild a massive zombie military. His operations were halted when the Straw Hat Pirates led by Monkey D. Luffy defeated him. Moria later participated in the Marineford Summit War, but immediately following the battle, he was ambushed by Donquixote Doflamingo under secret orders from the World Government, escaping by vanishing.
Relationships
Gecko Moria saw his younger, ambitious self in Monkey D. Luffy, who ultimately defeated him at Thriller Bark. His defining trauma stems from the Emperor Kaido, who annihilated Moria's original crew in the New World. In contrast, Moria shares an enduring bond of loyalty with his key officers Absalom, Dr. Hogback, and Perona, the latter of whom he raised. His officers repeatedly risk their lives to protect him, a devotion Moria reciprocates without hesitation. After the Summit War, he was targeted for elimination by Donquixote Doflamingo on secret authority from the World Government.
Trivia
Gecko Moria is known for his signature laugh, 'Kishishishi.' His favorite food is caviar marinade. Due to his unusually shaped head and neck, Monkey D. Luffy gave him the nickname 'giant scallion.' His appearance and the overall theme of Thriller Bark are heavily inspired by classic gothic horror motifs, including Dracula and bats.
