Overview
Giolla is a character from the manga and anime series ONE PIECE. She serves as an officer in the Donquixote Pirates (also known as the Donquixote Family), operating specifically within the Special Ability team commanded by Supreme Officer Trébol. Hailing from the North Blue, this 61-year-old pirate is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit user who consumed the Art-Art Fruit, making her an "Art Human." Defined by her outlandish artistic sensibilities and flamboyant behavior, she acts as a supporting antagonist during the Dressrosa Arc.
Appearance
Giolla is a large, stout woman with long, flashy permed hair styled in a combination of yellow and orange tones. She wears distinct triangular glasses and colorful floral-patterned outfits. Her facial features include purple eyes and dark lipstick. While her current physique is heavily rounded, she possessed a slender and well-proportioned body during her younger years.
Personality
Giolla possesses an extraordinarily high, eccentric sense of aesthetics and takes immense pride in her self-proclaimed beauty, often making extravagant claims about her appearance. She is highly gullible and susceptible to flattery; compliments regarding her artistic creations easily catch her off guard and leave her open to trickery. Although she exhibits a doting, maternal demeanor toward younger crewmates, she imposes her personal whims on their upbringing and can harbor irrational prejudices against people of specific origins. She consistently appends her speech with a distinctive, haughty verbal tic.
Abilities
Having eaten the Paramecia-type Art-Art Fruit, Giolla is an Art Human capable of emitting a specialized smoke from her body. Anything touched by this mist—whether living organisms or inanimate objects—is transformed into abstract modern art, leaving victims unable to move or attack properly. Her techniques include blasting smoke from her palms, turning victims into a mural that gradually drains their life, and converting her surroundings into an artistic realm that blocks perception abilities like Viola's Giro Giro no Mi. She is also proficient in armed melee combat using a machine gun. Her art transformations are completely neutralized if she falls unconscious.
Background
Originating from the North Blue, Giolla joined the Donquixote Pirates and served for decades as an officer. During the events on Dressrosa, she led an assault on the Thousand Sunny to kidnap Kozuki Momonosuke. Although she successfully transformed several Straw Hat Pirates and their ship into abstract art, she was tricked by Brook, who feigned interest in her artwork to strike her down. Retreating to the Royal Palace, she later attempted to violently force Princess Mansherry to use her healing powers to restore fallen officers, but her effort was thwarted by Tontatta warriors. She was ultimately defeated and taken into custody by the Marines.
Relationships
Giolla is fiercely loyal to Donquixote Doflamingo and serves under Supreme Officer Trébol. She exerted a heavy influence on Dellinger, raising him in feminine clothing according to her personal taste. While she doted on a young Trafalgar Law, she also expressed fearful prejudice regarding his hometown, and years later ended up taken hostage by him. During the Dressrosa campaign, she clashed directly with Straw Hat Pirates members Nami and Brook, and engaged in conflict with Tontatta tribe members including Princess Mansherry, Leo, and Kabu.
Trivia
Giolla's birthday on January 25th corresponds to Japan's designated "Beauty Anniversary." Her favorite food is aesthetically pleasing desserts that look like works of art. Story flashbacks show that she held a dramatically slimmer figure in her younger days compared to her current stocky frame. Her habit of overestimating her own beauty and her distinct mannerisms reinforce her heavily comedic role in the story.
