Overview
Koushirou is a character from the manga series One Piece. He is the master of the Isshin Dojo, located in Shimotsuki Village in the East Blue. As a sword instructor, he is known for being the former master of Roronoa Zoro, the swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates, as well as the father of Zoro's late childhood rival, Kuina.
Appearance
Koushirou is a middle-aged man who wears round spectacles and wears his hair tied back in a low ponytail. He constantly wears a gentle, composed smile. Originally drawn with a sharp chin, his facial features gradually softened into a rounder shape over time. His black hair has grayed as he aged, with visible wrinkles forming around his forehead, eyes, and mouth.
Personality
Koushirou has a remarkably calm, warm, and polite demeanor, always speaking in a mild tone. As a instructor, he teaches his disciples with patience. Though he held somewhat traditional views regarding female swordsmen in the past, he deeply respected his late daughter Kuina and later supported Roronoa Zoro's ambition to become a great swordsman. Even after Zoro turned to piracy and earned a high bounty, Koushirou did not criticize him, warmly acknowledging his former pupil's success.
Abilities
As the head master of the Isshin Dojo, Koushirou possesses extensive knowledge of swordsmanship, which he imparts to his apprentices. While his exact physical combat capabilities are not explicitly shown, he holds a profound philosophy regarding the sword, teaching that true power in swordsmanship lies in the ability to protect what one desires to protect and cut only what one intends to cut.
Background
Koushirou was born in the East Blue to Shimotsuki Kozaburo, a renowned swordsmith who illegally left Wano Country, making Koushirou a distant descendant of the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma. He founded the Isshin Dojo in Shimotsuki Village and raised his daughter, Kuina. Tragically, Kuina died at a young age after an accidental fall down the stairs. Following her passing, Koushirou granted her prized blade, the Wado Ichimonji, to Roronoa Zoro to support the young boy's determination.
Relationships
Koushirou is the son of Shimotsuki Kozaburo, a swordsmith from Wano Country. His daughter and former pupil, Kuina, passed away during her youth. He served as the master to Roronoa Zoro, entrusting him with Kuina's sword, Wado Ichimonji, after her death. Additionally, he has a subtle connection to Monkey D. Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army, having provided supplies to his crew when their vessel stopped near the village.
Trivia
Whenever a news report featuring Roronoa Zoro's latest bounty is published, Koushirou takes the newspaper and leaves it at his daughter Kuina's grave.
