Background
After navigating the Grand Line with the Cook Pirates, Zeff's fleet raided a passenger ship in the East Blue, only for a severe storm to wreck both vessels. Stranded on a barren rock island with a young Sanji for 85 days, Zeff gave the boy all the remaining food while enduring the loss of his own right leg. Sharing his dream of finding the legendary ocean All Blue, Zeff entrusted that ambition to Sanji. Following their rescue, he used his wealth to open the Baratie. Years later, after defending his vessel from the Krieg Pirates, he encouraged Sanji to set sail alongside Monkey D. Luffy.
Relationships
Zeff serves as a mentor, savior, and foster father to Sanji. Though they constantly exchange harsh words, they share an unbreakable bond forged by mutual survival and their shared dream of the All Blue. Zeff's birthday on April 2 is derived from Japanese numerical wordplay on the word chef. His favorite food is spicy chicken wings. While the original manga depicts him resorting to self-cannibalism to survive their starvation on the island, the television anime adaptation modified this to him severing his leg with an anchor chain to rescue Sanji underwater. In the special Episode of Luffy, a wax figure representing his younger self prior to losing his leg makes an appearance.
