Overview
X Drake is a prominent character in ONE PIECE, widely known by the epithet "Red Flag" and as one of the infamous pirates of the "Worst Generation." Originally introduced as a former Marine Rear Admiral who left the Navy to lead the Drake Pirates, he later infiltrates the Beast Pirates under the Four Emperors' Kaido, rising to the high rank of Tobi Roppo. In truth, he never actually abandoned his allegiance to the Marines; he secretly serves as the Captain of the Marine Secret Special Force known as "SWORD," conducting high-risk undercover intelligence operations.
Appearance
X Drake is distinguished by a prominent X-shaped scar on his chin and a large "X" design painted or tattooed across his chest and abdomen. He has short hair with spiked bangs, sideburns, facial hair, and blue eyes. His attire primarily features black or navy blue shades, including an open jacket with fur trim, pants, gloves, and a black mask-like accessory over his eyes. Before the time skip, he wore a black hat, which he later discarded. He carries a sword on the left side of his waist and an axe on his right side.
Personality
Drake is fundamentally calm, analytical, and possesses deep insight into the internal affairs of the Marines and the World Government. He holds a firm personal sense of justice as a Marine; while he strictly fulfills his mission even if it requires acting like a true pirate, he becomes visibly disturbed when encountering the World Government's intelligence agency CP-0 operating in secret. Hailing from the North Blue, he harbors a surprising fascination with Germa 66, showing genuine excitement upon seeing them. He also possesses a comical weakness to female nudity, becoming entirely flustered and fainting at the sight of it.
Abilities
Drake ate the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Allosaurus, a rare Ancient Zoan-type Devil Fruit allowing him to transform into a dark green allosaurus or a human-dinosaur hybrid. In his full beast form, his sharp teeth can pierce Pacifista armor, and his powerful tail sweep inflicts heavy damage. His hybrid form offers incredible physical balance and elevated strength, allowing him to defeat massive opponents with a single blow. He possesses remarkable durability and quick recovery speed. In combat, he wields a sword and a bladed mace-axe in a dual-weapon style, executing signature attacks like "X Calibur," an X-shaped slash, while utilizing both Armament and Observation Haki.
Background
Born in the North Blue as the son of Marine officer X Barrels, Drake was nicknamed "Dory" as a child and admired his father. However, after his father turned pirate, Drake suffered severe abuse. Thirteen years prior to the main story, he escaped Doflamingo's "Birdcage" on Minion Island and was taken into Marine custody. Rising to the rank of Rear Admiral, he became the Captain of the secret unit SWORD. Feigning a downfall to become a pirate just like his father, he formed the Drake Pirates and entered the New World. He successfully infiltrated Kaido's Beast Pirates and rose to become one of the Tobi Roppo. When his undercover identity was exposed during the Wano climax, he chose to fight alongside Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates.
Relationships
Drake was abused by his father, X Barrels, but holds no lingering hatred over his past. As the commander of SWORD, he maintains secret communication with his subordinate Koby, keeping him informed of global developments and Wano's situation. During the battle of Wano, after his cover was blown, he requested an alliance with Monkey D. Luffy and fought alongside Roronoa Zoro. He also shares complex dynamics with fellow North Blue native Basil Hawkins and Scratchmen Apoo, engaging in rivalries and direct conflict with them throughout the New World operations.
Trivia
His name is derived from Sir Francis Drake, the famous English sea captain, privateer, and naval officer. The prefix "Allo-" in Allosaurus means "strange" or "different," fittingly reflecting Drake's unusual dual identity as a secret Marine agent acting as a pirate. Notably, among all the pirate captains of the Worst Generation, his pirate flag is the only one that does not feature a traditional skull mark, subtly hinting at his true status long before it was revealed.
