Overview
Chew is a character in the manga and anime series One Piece. He is a Kiss Fish-Man hailing from Fish-Man Island and serves as an officer in the Arlong Pirates. Originally a member of the Sun Pirates under Fisher Tiger, he later accompanied Arlong to the East Blue after the crew disbanded, establishing their headquarters in Cocoyasi Village to build a Fish-Man empire.
Appearance
As a Kiss Fish-Man, Chew features blue skin and long hair tied back behind his head. His most prominent physical trait is his facial structure, which features a long, strongly protruding mouth paired with unusually thick lips.
Personality
Chew harbors a strong Fish-Man supremacist mindset, looking down on humans as inferior beings. Ever since his early days with the Sun Pirates, he exhibited a strong desire to increase his notoriety. He possesses a distinctive vocal habit of making kissing noises during speech. In battle, he quickly grows annoyed when forced to deal with erratic or seemingly foolish opponents.
Abilities
Chew specializes in mid-range combat by spewing water stored in his body from his mouth with devastating projectile force. His signature technique, Water Gun, fires water bullets capable of penetrating human flesh and becomes far more lethal near bodies of water. He can also deploy Water Cannon by holding a vast volume of water in his stomach to snap forest trees, as well as Hundred Water Guns to fire rapid-fire water stream bursts like a machine gun. Additionally, he possesses the naturally formidable physical strength common to Fish-Men.
Background
Raised in the Fish-Man District of Fish-Man Island, Chew joined the Sun Pirates under Fisher Tiger during his youth. Following Tiger's death and subsequent ideological rift between Jinbe and Arlong, Chew left the crew with Arlong. They migrated to the East Blue, subjugating Cocoyasi Village to build Arlong Park. During the Straw Hat Pirates' raid, he pursued Usopp into the forest, but was tricked by a fake-death ploy. Doused in liquor and set ablaze, Chew was struck unconscious by repeated hammer blows and ultimately taken into Marine custody.
Relationships
Chew is loyal to Captain Arlong, choosing to follow him after departing the Sun Pirates. He shares a lifelong friendship with fellow Arlong Pirates officers Hatchan and Kuroobi, having grown up alongside them in the Fish-Man District. While he held reverence for initial captain Fisher Tiger, he parted ways with Jinbe. During the clash in Cocoyasi Village, he fought against the Straw Hat Pirates' sniper Usopp, who managed to defeat him.
Trivia
Chew's fish species, the Japanese smelt-whiting (kisu), combined with his kissing sound speech habit, forms a play on the Japanese words for kissing (kisu and chu). His battle against Usopp in Cocoyasi Village marks Usopp's very first victory over a major officer of an enemy pirate crew, memorable for its comedic beat and reliance on trickery.
