Overview
Sir Crocodile is a major pirate in the One Piece series. Known by the epithet "King of the Desert," he was formerly one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and the secret president of the criminal syndicate Baroque Works under the codename "Mr. 0." As the primary antagonist of the Alabasta Arc, he handed Monkey D. Luffy his first defeat. Following his imprisonment and subsequent escape from Impel Down, he re-emerged in the New World as a co-founder and leading figure of the organization Cross Guild alongside Dracule Mihawk and Buggy.
Appearance
Crocodile is a tall man with slicked-back black hair and a prominent horizontal scar running across his face. He wears formal attire underneath a thick fur long coat, along with multiple gem-encrusted rings on his right hand, giving him the appearance of a mafia boss. In place of his left hand, he sports a large golden hook. This outer hook serves as a sheath, concealing a smaller hook laced with deadly scorpion venom, as well as a dagger built into the base. He is frequently seen smoking a cigar.
Personality
Crocodile is a ruthless and calculating strategist who views piracy purely as a business. Pragmatic and distrustful, he refuses to rely on anyone and will unhesitatingly discard subordinates once their usefulness ends. He excels at psychological manipulation, exploiting social fractures to bring down nations. Having lost his early ambition after a defeat in the Grand Line, he holds a cynical view of dreams, believing that only victory grants the right to speak of justice. Despite his cold nature, he occasionally demonstrates a surprisingly observant respect for capable individuals and acts with unexpected leniency toward former associates.
Abilities
He possesses the powers of the Suna Suna no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into, create, and control sand. He can produce sandstorms, shape sand into sharp blades, and turn his lower body into sand for high-speed travel. His right hand has the devastating ability to absorb moisture from anything it touches, instantly dehydrating living beings or reducing solid rock to dust. His primary weakness is water or any liquid, which solidifies his sand body and renders him susceptible to physical attacks. He is also a user of Armament and Observation Haki.
Background
After gaining fame as a young pirate and joining the Warlords, Crocodile suffered a crushing defeat against Whitebeard, which forced him to abandon his original ambitions. Years later, he formed Baroque Works to secretly take over the Alabasta Kingdom and uncover the ancient weapon Pluton. His plans were ultimately thwarted by Princess Nefertari Vivi and the Straw Hat Pirates, leading to the revocation of his Warlord status and imprisonment in Impel Down. He later escaped during Luffy's break-in, played a pivotal role in the Marineford War, and eventually ventured back into the New World.
Relationships
Crocodile holds a complex dynamic with Monkey D. Luffy, whom he twice defeated in Alabasta before eventually forming an uneasy alliance with him during the escape from Impel Down and the Marineford War. He shares a professional partnership with Dracule Mihawk, with whom he co-founded Cross Guild. He maintains a dominant hold over Buggy due to outstanding debts, leveraging Buggy's delivery organization for their new enterprise. He is fiercely served by his right-hand man Daz Bonez (Mr. 1), while Emporio Ivankov of the Revolutionary Army knows a hidden secret from his past as a rookie.
Trivia
His name is derived from the reptile, which also serves as his official animal motif. His favorite foods are crocodile meat and tomatoes, while his least favorite is ketchup, and his personal hobby is mushroom hunting. He is known for his signature laughter, "Kuhahaha." In the animated film One Piece: Stampede, it is revealed that he previously fought the powerful pirate Douglas Bullet to a draw during his younger days.
