Overview

Gladius is an officer of the Donquixote Pirates in the manga and anime series One Piece. He serves in the special assault force within the Pica Army, which is led by top executive Pica. Possessing the powers of a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, he is a fiercely dedicated combatant devoted to his captain, Donquixote Doflamingo. During the Dressrosa Arc, Gladius stands as a key defender of the royal palace, attempting to thwart the infiltration forces with his destructive explosive abilities.

Appearance

Gladius is a man who wears a long, all-black coat, with most of his face concealed behind goggles and a face mask. The mask appears black in the original manga text but is rendered white on book covers and in the animated adaptation. He frequently wears headgear such as a top hat or a helmet, and his goggles double as a targeting device for marksmanship. His hair consists of needle-like strands, which are lost, leaving him temporarily bald, after executing certain full-body explosive techniques.

Personality

Gladius exhibits absolute loyalty toward Donquixote Doflamingo. He possesses a strict, orderly mindset and holds an intense hatred for anyone who fails to stick to established plans or schedules. When dealing with traitors to the crew, his temper flares uncontrollably, driving him to inflict brutal punishment on the offender. Despite his rigid seriousness, he can be surprisingly oblivious, failing to recognize enemy disguises. Compared to the eccentric figures around him, he presents a relatively level-headed and disciplined demeanor.

Abilities

Gladius gained the powers of the Paramecia-type Pamu Pamu no Mi, turning him into a Rupture Human. He can rapidly inflate and detonate his own body or any inorganic material he touches, excluding Seastone. While exploding his own body leaves him uninjured, inanimate objects are completely pulverized. He can set delayed or contact-triggered explosive traps, perform high jumps via blast recoil, and launch his needle-like hair as paralyzing darts. He is also a skilled marksman who uses his goggles for aiming, executing wide-reaching attacks like detonating his helmet or propelling arm projectiles.

Background

As a long-standing officer of the Donquixote Pirates, Gladius participated in the crew's operations for years and instructed a young Trafalgar Law in artillery and marksmanship. During the events of Punk Hazard, he restrained Baby 5 when she lashed out, and later took charge of royal palace security in Dressrosa. He overwhelmed enemy forces including members of the Tontatta tribe and the Thunder Soldier of Rage, Kyros. Although he targeted Nico Robin for elimination, he was thwarted by Cavendish and ultimately defeated by Bartolomeo. Rendered unconscious and unable to receive healing, he was captured by the Marines following Donquixote Doflamingo's defeat.

Relationships

Gladius owes unquestioning devotion to his captain, Donquixote Doflamingo, and serves under top executive Pica. Within the special assault force, he works alongside Baby 5 and Buffalo, and he previously trained a young Trafalgar Law in marksmanship. He holds intense hostility toward traitors, turning violently upon Donquixote Rosinante (Corazon) when his treason came to light. During the conflict in Dressrosa, he fought against the invasion force led by Monkey D. Luffy, engaging Nico Robin, Cavendish, and Bartolomeo in combat.

Trivia

The name of his Devil Fruit, the Pamu Pamu no Mi, derives from the sound and concept of popping or bursting. In combat, he initiated a close-quarters arm rupture technique starting with the word "Brachium...", but was interrupted before pronouncing its full title, leaving the exact move name unrevealed. Additionally, in the anime adaptation, after being rendered unconscious, he was depicted resting on a stretcher precariously balanced atop a jagged stone spire created by Pica prior to being taken into custody by the Marines.
