Overview
Smoker is a prominent Marine officer in the series ONE PIECE. Initially introduced as a Marine Captain stationed in Loguetown, he steadily rises through the ranks to Commodore and eventually Vice Admiral, serving as the base commander of the Marine G-5 branch in the New World. Widely known by his epithet "White Hunter," he is a fiercely dedicated combatant committed to apprehending pirates. Because of his stubborn adherence to his personal code of ethics and defiance of corruption within the World Government, upper management often views him as an unpredictable "wild dog." After witnessing Monkey D. Luffy escape his grasp in Loguetown, Smoker leads his crew into the Grand Line to relentlessly track down the Straw Hat Pirates.
Appearance
Smoker is a muscular, mature man with white hair and stern facial features. He prefers a wild outfit style, wearing his Marine jacket open directly over his bare skin without an inner shirt, with extra cigars stowed across his chest and arms. He constantly holds two cigars in his mouth. Following the two-year timeskip, his hairstyle changes to a slicked-back undercut, a winding scar appears down the left side of his face, and he wears sunglasses. During his days as a Marine recruit, he had a shaved head.
Personality
Despite his tough and intimidating exterior, Smoker possesses a strong sense of honor and empathy. He treats civilians with unexpected kindness, such as replacing a young girl's dropped ice cream instead of becoming angry, and protects his subordinates at great personal risk. He despises systemic injustice and openly rebels against higher-ups who attempt to cover up failures or steal credit. While he firmly believes pirates remain criminals regardless of circumstances and harbors deep distrust toward the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he is pragmatic enough to temporarily cooperate with enemies when necessary to overcome greater threats.
Abilities
Smoker ate the Moku Moku no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that enables him to transform his body into smoke, generate smoke, and restrain opponents across wide areas. He can fly by turning his lower body into smoke propulsion and drives a specialized smoke-powered amphibious vehicle called the Billower Bike. His weapon of choice is the Nanashaku Jutte, a large weapon tipped with Seastone to nullify Devil Fruit powers. In battle, he uses Armament and Observation Haki alongside signature techniques such as White Blow, White Out, White Snake, and White Vine.
Background
At twelve years old, Smoker witnessed the execution of Gol D. Roger in Loguetown, an event that left a profound impression on him due to Roger's fearless smile. Years later, while commanding the Marine post in Loguetown, he maintained a perfect record of preventing pirates from reaching the Grand Line until Monkey D. Luffy slipped away. Smoker immediately ventured into the Grand Line to pursue him. After exposing Crocodile's conspiracy in Alabasta and refusing to accept credit for actions taken by pirates, he advanced through the ranks, fought in the Marineford Summit War, and requested transfer to the notorious G-5 branch in the New World, eventually becoming its base commander.
Relationships
Smoker shares a complex rivalry with Monkey D. Luffy, pursuing him doggedly while holding an unspoken mutual respect. He acts as a protective mentor to his chief subordinate, Tashigi, despite scolding her clumsiness. His Marine academy classmate Hina has frequently intervened to save him from disciplinary action by superiors. Smoker finds common ground with Admiral Issho regarding the abolition of the Seven Warlords of the Sea system, maintains contact with former Admiral Kuzan, and crossed paths with Trafalgar Law and the traitorous officer Vergo during the events on Punk Hazard.
Trivia
Smoker is a relentless chain-smoker whose favorite food is smoked chicken, and his personal hobbies include pottery and playing at casinos. His birthday is celebrated on March 14, matching White Day. In an author Q&A section, it was revealed that when his mind was swapped into Tashigi's body on Punk Hazard, Smoker intentionally tore off her brassiere himself because he refused to wear unneeded garments under an open jacket.
