Overview

Genzo is a supporting character in the manga and anime series One Piece. He serves as the resident police officer of Cocoyashi Village, located in the Conomi Islands within the East Blue region. Despite his stern and intimidating appearance, he acts as a protective, fatherly figure to Nami and Nojiko following the death of their adoptive mother.

Appearance

Genzo is a middle-aged man with a stern facial expression, short black hair, brown eyes, and facial hair including a mustache. His entire body features extensive suture scars resulting from cut wounds inflicted by the fish-man Kuroobi. He wears a hat that previously featured an attached pinwheel to comfort Nami in her infancy, though he eventually removed it.

Personality

Behind Genzo's harsh exterior lies a deeply compassionate and heroic demeanor. He is intensely protective of his village, willing to risk his life for others. He also exhibits a humorously doting paternal side toward Nami; despite passionately complaining to Marine Headquarters about her revealing bounty poster photos, he affectionately displays oversized prints of those same photos inside his duty station.

Abilities

Genzo possesses no Devil Fruit abilities or extraordinary powers, relying on the physical capabilities of an ordinary law enforcement officer. When confronting hostile forces like the Arlong Pirates, he demonstrates resolve by taking up blades, farming equipment, or household tools to fight alongside his fellow villagers.

Background

A long-standing friend of Belle-mère, Genzo suffered severe injuries trying to shield Nami and Nojiko when the Arlong Pirates conquered Cocoyashi Village. Aware of Nami's secret sacrifice to buy back the village, he endured years of tyrannical oppression alongside the townspeople. Following Arlong's defeat by the Straw Hat Pirates, he saw Nami off on her journey and resumed his peaceful duties.

Relationships

Genzo shared a deep connection with Belle-mère and cherishes Nami and Nojiko as his own daughters. Before Nami departed with the Straw Hat Pirates, he sternly warned Monkey D. Luffy never to strip away her happiness. Conversely, he harbored intense hostility toward Arlong, Kuroobi, and the corrupt Marine Captain Nezumi for tormenting his home.

Trivia

The pinwheel on Genzo's hat was originally worn to prevent baby Nami from crying at his intimidating face. This accessory inspired Monkey D. Luffy's 'Gomu Gomu no Pinwheel' attack and was later incorporated into the design of Nami's shoulder tattoo.
