Overview

Yosaku is a character from the manga and anime series One Piece. Originating from the East Blue, he originally operated as a pirate bounty hunter alongside his partner Johnny under the duo name "Yosaku and Johnny." He deeply respects Roronoa Zoro, whom he befriended during Zoro's own stint as a bounty hunter, affectionately referring to him as an elder brother figure. After assisting the Straw Hat Pirates during the conflict against the Arlong Pirates, Yosaku retired from bounty hunting to settle down as a fisherman in Cocoyashi Village.

Appearance

Yosaku has a shaved head equipped with protective headgear. He wears a hoodie pulled over a black T-shirt and carries a sword at his side, which he has been depicted holding with his left hand. Two years after the events in Cocoyashi Village, his physique undergoes a noticeable transformation, becoming heavily muscular.

Personality

Yosaku is pragmatic and cautious, usually choosing to target weaker bounties he is certain he can defeat rather than engaging dangerous foes. While this cautious nature leads others to view him as low-profile, he possesses a strong sense of loyalty and courage when his allies are in danger. He holds immense admiration for Roronoa Zoro, treating him with unwavering respect. He also displays a lighthearted, comedic side, famous for his skill at performing a party trick involving chopsticks stuck in his nose.

Abilities

Yosaku fights using a sword, which he holds in his left hand. Although his overall combat capabilities fall short against formidable pirates or high-ranking organization members, he contributes to battles through supportive actions, such as supplying his weapon to Roronoa Zoro. Beyond combat, he possesses the unique talent of performing a nose-chopstick trick. After transitioning to life as a fisherman, he demonstrates significant physical strength gained through his daily labor.

Background

Yosaku traveled the East Blue aboard the vessel Bountymaru alongside his partner Johnny. While suffering from severe scurvy, their ship was accidentally struck by a test cannon shot from the Going Merry, leading to their meeting with the Straw Hat Pirates, who cured his illness. When Nami stole the Going Merry at the Baratie, Yosaku joined Monkey D. Luffy and Sanji to track her down to Cocoyashi Village, informing them about the Seven Warlords of the Sea and Jinbe during the journey. Upon reaching the village, he reunited with Johnny and attempted to storm Arlong Park; despite being quickly defeated, they stood their ground to buy time for the villagers until Luffy arrived. Following Arlong's downfall, Yosaku retired from bounty hunting to live as a successful fisherman in Cocoyashi Village.

Relationships

Yosaku shares a bond with his longtime partner Johnny, with whom he operated as a bounty hunter and later settled down as a fisherman. He looks up to Roronoa Zoro as an elder brother figure, having worked with him prior to Zoro joining the Straw Hat Pirates. He is deeply grateful to Monkey D. Luffy for saving his life from scurvy and notably taught Luffy his nose-chopstick trick. During the confrontation at Cocoyashi Village, Yosaku risked his life alongside Johnny to protect the villagers and help free Nami from the clutches of Arlong.

Trivia

During the voyage to Cocoyashi Village, Yosaku became the first character in the series to mention the name of Jinbe while explaining the Seven Warlords of the Sea to Luffy and Sanji. The nose-chopstick party trick he taught to Luffy was later passed on by Luffy to the warriors of Amazon Lily. The vessel he and Johnny operated during their bounty hunting days was named the Bountymaru.
