Overview
Enel is the primary antagonist of the Skypiea arc in ONE PIECE. He is the former self-proclaimed supreme "God" and ruler of the sky island Skypiea. Possessing an absolute god complex, he enforced a reign of terror through his devastating powers. Having eaten the Logia-type Rumble-Rumble Fruit (Goro Goro no Mi), he gained the ability to manipulate and transform his body into electricity. After his encounter with the Straw Hat Pirates, he departed Skypiea aboard his flying golden ship, the Ark Maxim, bound for his sacred destination known as Fairy Vearth.
Appearance
Enel is a tall, highly muscular man who goes shirtless, exposing his defined physique. He has blue eyes, thick eyebrows, lower eyelashes, and a wide nose with horizontal creases, accompanied by remarkably long earlobes. He covers his head with a white fabric cap that hides a blonde perm beneath. Unlike other sky islanders who possess small white wings, Enel features four tomoe-patterned drums joined in a ring across his upper back. He also wears various jewelry items, including arm rings and bracelets.
Personality
Enel possesses an exceptionally arrogant, ruthless, and sadistic disposition, viewing himself as an omnipotent deity above all humanity. Expressing himself with a distinct high-pitched laugh, he smites anyone who opposes him without hesitation. Despite his immense vanity, he is remarkably pragmatic and tactical in battle, quickly adapting to unexpected abilities, analyzing complex machinery like his ark, and devising counters against sea-prism stone. He harbors a deeply rooted belief that humans living in the sky is unnatural, driving his cold determination to destroy the sky islands.
Abilities
Through the Logia-type Rumble-Rumble Fruit, Enel can turn his body into lightning, discharging up to 200 million volts of electricity and moving at lightning speed. He utilizes extreme electrical heat to reshape his golden staff into different weapons and can restart his own heart using self-administered electric shocks. Combined with his electro-receptive senses, his highly trained Kenbunshoku Haki (known as Mantra) allows him to read actions and eavesdrop on conversations across all of Skypiea. While capable of devastating island-destroying attacks using his flying ship Maxim, his electrical powers are completely neutralized by rubber bodies.
Background
Hailing from the sky island of Birka, Enel completely destroyed his homeland before invading Skypiea alongside his four loyal priests. After overthrowing the ruling God, Gan Fall, he usurped the throne and ruled through absolute terror. He forced the locals to build the flying ark Maxim out of Upper Yard's gold, aiming to obliterate Skypiea and journey to his sacred land on the moon. Though defeated in a fierce battle by Monkey D. Luffy, he quickly recovered, restarted his ship, and successfully reached the moon alone, where he reactivated ancient automata with his electricity and acquired a new army.
Relationships
Enel violently deposed the former ruler Gan Fall to claim domain over Skypiea. He commanded four powerful subordinates known as the Priests—Ohm, Shura, Satori, and Gedatsu—to enforce his regime and oversee survival trials. During his encounter with the Straw Hat Pirates, he attempted to recruit Nami due to her compliance, but faced his natural enemy in Monkey D. Luffy, whose rubber composition rendered his lightning ineffective. After arriving on the moon, he earned the absolute loyalty of the automaton Lieutenant Spacey and an ancient army of underground robots.
Trivia
Enel's visual design and stylistic inspiration were based on the famous American rapper Eminem. His dramatically exaggerated reaction—featuring bulging eyes and a dropped jaw upon discovering that his lightning had no effect on Monkey D. Luffy—became universally known among fans as the iconic "Enel Face" meme.
