Overview

Altera is a Saber-class Servant in the Fate series, introduced in Fate/Grand Order and Fate/EXTELLA. Based on the historical ruler Attila the Hun, she is a legendary fifth-century king who established a vast empire across Western Asia and Europe. Characterized as a pure sovereign of battle and a relentless force of destruction, she is driven by high pride and exceptional combat mastery while confronting threats with a composed, methodical mindset.

Appearance

Altera is a dark-skinned woman with red eyes and short silver hair covered by a white veil. She wears a white outfit featuring exposed shoulders, bare collarbones, and detached sleeves. Distinctive tri-colored designs mark her forehead and chest, while intricate silver patterns run across her body. She wields Photon Ray, a longsword characterized by a futuristic aesthetic and a blade constructed from three-colored light.

Personality

Altera behaves with standard rationality and a cool demeanor, facing difficulties without relinquishing logic. She often characterizes herself as a killing machine, executing destruction ruthlessly without hesitation, yet she harbors the breadth of mind to respect capable warriors. Beneath her metallic detachment lies a quiet emptiness over her destructive nature and a deep curiosity about living a life outside of combat. Although stoic, she displays a softer side, strongly disliking the name Attila for lacking cuteness and preferring her customary name instead.

Abilities

Altera possesses exceptionally high overall parameters across all attributes. Her Magic Resistance cancels advanced sorcery, and Riding grants her control over various mounts. She maintains high Divinity alongside tactical instincts for mass combat. Through Crescent Crest, she temporarily boosts physical parameters at low mana cost while benefiting from intuitive reflexes. Her Passive Erosion changes items she holds into optimum states based on her current preference. In battle, her sword extends like a whip, emitting shockwaves and rainbow lasers. Her Noble Phantasm, Photon Ray, uses a rotating tri-color blade to destroy matter, while its unbound form, Teardrop Photon Ray, links with the war god Mars to rain down a beam of divine light.

Background

Historically discovered as a tattooed infant in ancient ruins, Altera was raised by the Huns to become their ultimate warrior. She built a massive empire extending from Western Asia to Gaul, routing local tribes and creating the catalyst for the Western Roman Empire's eventual decline. Although her empire collapsed rapidly following her death due to a lack of administrative focus, her title remained a lasting symbol of dread throughout history. Within the broader Fate narrative, she shares a deep connection to the extraterrestrial entity Sefar, manifesting in different forms across various lunar and terrestrial conflicts.

Relationships

Altera establishes firm bonds with her Masters, Fujimaru Ritsuka and Hakuno Kishinami. She shares a complex historic and mythological tie with Brynhildr, who regards Altera as a sibling figure across various encounters. Additionally, she interacts with other Servants such as Martha and Boudica during everyday activities.

Trivia

Altera was designed by illustrator huke. Although mythological tradition connects her to Etzel in the Nibelungenlied and Atli in Norse mythology, she retains virtually no memories of her historical marriages or political accomplishments. Unlike her main historical name, she does not object to being called Etzel, finding the sound of it cute.
