Overview

Sen no Rikyu is a Berserker-class Servant appearing in the mobile game Fate/Grand Order, first introduced during the GUDAGUDA Shin Yamatai-koku event. Based on the historic merchant and legendary tea master who perfected the art of wabi-cha during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, she is summoned not as the tall man known in life, but in the form of a petite girl with white hair. While maintaining the understated dignity of a cultural figure, she also exhibits eccentric merchant instincts and formidable combat capabilities.

Appearance

Despite her slender and extremely petite build, she possesses extraordinary physical strength and an unexpectedly heavy body weight of 132 kg. She features black eyes and medium-length, gradient hair combining white and black tones with straight blunt bangs. Her attire consists of traditional Japanese clothing, including a black kimono with wide, long sleeves, an obi sash, tassels, and a hat. Dark, hand-like shadowy entities rest noticeably near her shoulders.

Personality

She speaks with the serene, wise tone of an elderly person who has attained enlightenment, referring to herself as 'watakushi.' Though she embodies the restrained elegance of tea culture, she also harbors a practical, highly eccentric merchant mindset that readily embraces modern elements. She holds an uncompromising commitment to her aesthetic values, intensely disliking anything that covers up natural flavors—such as matcha lattes. When expressing strong emotions, she humorously states her own name, such as describing herself as indignant.

Abilities

In combat, she uses tea-related powers for support alongside aggressive physical attacks executed via the mysterious entities accompanying her, delivering powerful strikes dubbed 'Rikyu Punch' and dark energy lasers called 'Rikyu Beam.' Her personal skills include Madness Enhancement (Sabi), Territory Creation (Wabi), Aesthetic Appreciation (Tea), Flexible Restlessness, Pinnacle of Wabi, A Single Flower, and Subtle Black. Her Noble Phantasm, Ichigoichie, creates a Reality Marble in the form of a tiny tea room. Targets trapped inside have their parameters constrained and their spirits overwhelmed by intense spiritual gravity.

Background

Born as a wealthy merchant named Tanaka Yoshiro in Sakai, he later adopted the names Sen Soeki and Sen no Rikyu. Rejecting existing traditions that favored extravagant tea utensils, he developed wabi-cha, a simple style emphasizing refined understatedness. Serving under Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he managed tea ceremonies, procured firearms, and mediated among feudal lords, acquiring enormous political sway. However, his unyielding values and immense influence eventually led to a rift with Hideyoshi, resulting in an order for his ritual suicide.

Relationships

Oda Nobunaga, her former lord, recognizes her underlying identity despite her changed appearance. Toward Toyotomi Hideyoshi, she holds intense resentment due to her forced death, extending this animosity to his retainer Ishida Mitsunari. Mori Nagayoshi, her former student in tea ceremony, maintains respect for her expertise. Toward her Master, Ritsuka Fujimaru, she shows warm favor, respecting their natural and unpretentious demeanors.

Trivia

Her blunt technique names like 'Rikyu Punch' and 'Rikyu Beam' serve as comedic highlights in her animation set. Her fiery hatred of matcha lattes is inspired by a comedic manga reference. Additionally, her voice actress, Mie Sonozaki, holds an official Chinese tea certified qualification in real life.
