Overview
Constantine XI is a 5-star Rider-class Servant featured in Fate/Grand Order. He is the heroic spirit of the final emperor of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire, who fought to the absolute end during the fall of Constantinople. Despite his imperial bloodline, he is depicted as a pragmatic, approachable intellectual with a strong sense of duty toward protecting others. First introduced under the temporary alias Michael during a White Day event, he later plays a central role as the monarch of the Reinstatement Realm in the story chapter Traum.
Appearance
In his initial form, Constantine XI appears as a young man with black hair styled in a mash bob, black eyes, and glasses. He wears a suit with a red vest bearing an emblem on the left chest, alongside an earring featuring a crimson, arrowhead-shaped stone. His Second Ascension replaces his suit with red armor and removes his glasses. In his Third Ascension, his hair lengthens, and he dons shining silver armor.
Personality
Constantine XI is a soft-spoken, intellectual gentleman who maintains a calm and polite demeanor, though he adopts a rougher tone in extreme crises. Bearing the memory of his empire's downfall, he harbors a contradictory mindset: he accepts the realistic likelihood of defeat while simultaneously remaining fiercely resolved to fight with everything he has. Despite his royal pedigree, he possesses commoner-like sensibilities, deep curiosity, and a humble nature. At his core lies a strong righteous indignation against unprovoked destruction, driving him to steadfastly protect those in his care.
Abilities
Specializing in defense, Constantine XI fights atop a white horse with a sword. In battle, he summons Roman soldiers to throw shot puts or perform shield bashes, executes coordinated sword strikes, releases rainbow-colored light from his blade, spins a massive chain to generate a light vortex, and calls down arrow volleys and artillery fire. His skills include Magic Resistance (B+), Riding (B+), Independent Action (C++), Prayer of Hagia Sophia (C-), Empire of the Sunsetting Sun (EX), and Final Privilege (C), which allows him to temporarily manifest or transfer skills at high mana cost. His Noble Phantasm, Theodosios Konstantinos: Prayer for the Triple Wall, projects a pseudo-manifestation of Constantinople's impenetrable triple walls, forming a near-invincible fortress when concentrated on a small group.
Background
Historically the final emperor of the Byzantine Empire's Palaiologos dynasty, Constantine XI led the defense of Constantinople during the 1453 Ottoman siege. Refusing surrender demands from Sultan Mehmed II, he delivered a final address to his people and charged into battle as the city fell. In Fate/Grand Order, he was initially summoned to a singularity prior to Chaldea's arrival; after losing his abilities in battle, he adopted the pseudonym Michael out of shame before revealing his identity. He later serves as the monarch of the Reinstatement Realm in the Traum singularity.
Relationships
Constantine XI serves his Master, Fujimaru Ritsuka, with absolute loyalty, striving to protect them at all costs. During the events in Traum, he developed a profound romantic bond with Pope Johanna despite their differing religious branches. He holds historical enmity toward Mehmed II, who destroyed his empire. He views earlier Roman emperors with reverence, feeling remorse for failing to preserve their legacy. He respects Leonidas I as a fellow defensive monarch, while Minamoto no Tametomo holds significance as the warrior whose devastating shots pierced Constantine's barrier in Traum.
Trivia
His temporary alias Michael derives from his ancestor Michael VIII Palaiologos, the founder of his dynasty. During his debut event, his relaxed voice lines as a shop clerk sparked lively community speculation regarding his voice actor. An in-game battle animation oversight in Traum briefly showed him commanding backline arrow and artillery strikes immediately after agreeing to a formal duel with Don Quixote, which developers subsequently patched to exclusively feature sword strikes. In terms of personal preferences, he enjoys playing chess, shogi, and card games, but harbors a strong distaste for siege warfare.
