Overview

Medb is a Servant appearing in the Fate series, debuting in Fate/Grand Order as a Rider-class Servant. Originating from Celtic mythology's Ulster Cycle as the Queen of Connacht, she is a sovereign who governed her realm through intense desire, pride, and strategic cunning. Unapologetic in her pursuit of power and affection, she led countless warriors into battle and forced entire nations to bend to her will. In the main story of Fate/Grand Order, she acts as a formidable antagonist leading a Celtic army to establish her personal ideal realm in North America.

Appearance

Medb is depicted as a woman with long pink hair, brown eyes, and a physical form described as goddess-like in its perfection. In her standard Rider manifestation, she carries a riding whip and commands a heavy iron chariot drawn by two bulls. When shifting to her swimsuit Saber form, she adopts the aesthetic of a glamorous photo idol while wielding a borrowed magical sword. She has also appeared in alternate attire, including a distinctive chief warden outfit.

Personality

Medb possesses a dual nature that is seamlessly pure and innocent yet shamelessly lustful and ruthless. Guided entirely by her own desires, she pursues handsome warriors, immense wealth, and supreme influence without hesitation. She holds absolute confidence in her beauty and authority, believing her charm can sway any man. Beneath her arrogant, queenly demeanor lies a remarkably hardworking individual who undergoes rigorous self-improvement behind the scenes to maintain perfection. While ruthless toward her enemies, she can show surprisingly genuine care and attention to those whose beauty or worth she acknowledges.

Abilities

Medb possesses high Magic Resistance and Riding skills, alongside her innate ability to retain a perfect physical condition without effort. She commands followers using her high charisma, controls men through charming vocal magic and enchanted red mead, and can instantly generate armies of nameless soldiers by dripping her own blood containing replicated genetic information. Her Noble Phantasm, Chariot My Love, charges forward with a two-bull chariot, locking male targets into an enclosed bounded field. She can also temporarily borrow her former lovers' powers, such as Fergus's sword Caladbolg to release rainbow blasts, or Conchobar's future vision. In her Saber form, she manipulates opponent attributes using a sweet perfume fragrance and executes charm-based techniques.

Background

In Irish mythology, Medb ruled Connacht and established ties with numerous kings and heroes. Her intense hostility toward the Ulster hero Cú Chulainn grew after he rejected her advances, prompting her to launch the massive War of the Brown Bull of Cooley against Ulster to force his submission. Through cunning strategies, she eventually orchestrated his demise. Mythological lore states her reign ended during a bath when her nephew Furbaide used a sling to hurl a block of hard dried cheese directly at her head. Upon her summoning in Fate/Grand Order, she utilizes the Holy Grail to create Cú Chulainn Alter, seeking to fulfill her obsession on her own terms.

Relationships

Medb retains a fierce obsession with Cú Chulainn due to his refusal to yield to her charm in life. In Fate/Grand Order, she uses the Holy Grail to spawn Cú Chulainn Alter, an idealized, relentless version of him tailored to her desires. Fergus mac Roich was one of her major lovers in life, whose weapon Caladbolg she continues to utilize despite his blunt assessment of her personality. She maintained a complex rivalry with her husband Ailill mac Mate and borrows skills from King Conchobar mac Nessa. If her Master proves to be a valiant hero in her eyes, she showers them with intense, unsparing affection.

Trivia

In later European folklore and literature, Queen Medb became associated with the fairy queen Mab, notably referenced in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Regarding her legendary demise by a thrown block of hard cheese, Medb counteracts this mythological vulnerability in Fate/Grand Order through physical training, mastering a roundhouse kick to deflect flying cheese—an action incorporated into her in-game attack animations. Additionally, an interlude story humorously reveals that her classification as a Rider stems from her history of riding her lovers rather than her command over conventional vehicles.
