Overview
Bucephalus is a Heroic Spirit appearing in the Fate series, including Fate/Zero and Fate/Grand Order. Known in real-world history as the legendary steed of Alexander the Great (Iskandar), the character is depicted as a female horse within the franchise. Though a fully registered Heroic Spirit in her own right, she is primarily summoned through her master's Noble Phantasm to carry her rider and their Master across the battlefield.
Appearance
Bucephalus is depicted as a black horse. A notable distinction in her visual appearance is her eye color, which changes depending on whether she is summoned alongside her master's younger form (Alexander) or older form (Iskandar). The character illustrations were produced by Takeshi Takeuchi for Iskandar's form and BUNBUN for Alexander's form.
Personality
Once feared as a violent, man-eating wild horse according to legend, she bonded deeply with her master after being tamed during his youth. Iskandar treats her as an equal and a true friend alongside his army, and she displays unwavering loyalty by fearlessly carrying her master and his allies through dangerous combat situations.
Abilities
When summoned via Iskandar's Noble Phantasm, Ionioi Hetairoi, Bucephalus appears as a classless Servant within the armies of the King of Conquerors. She is also summoned through Alexander's Noble Phantasm, Bucephalus: The Trampling of the Beginning. Even without her primary rider, she possesses the strength and stamina to transport multiple passengers across challenging terrain.
Background
During her life, she was a violent steed that no one could ride until the young Alexander successfully tamed her, making her his trusted mount for his conquests. In Fate/Zero, after Iskandar's chariot was destroyed, she carried both him and Waver Velvet into their final confrontation against Archer. In Fate/Grand Order, notably in the film adaptation of the Solomon chapter, she carries Fujimaru Ritsuka and Mash Kyrielight toward the throne of the Magic King after her master vanishes.
Relationships
She shares a strong bond of mutual trust with her master, Iskandar (Alexander), who considers her a cherished friend. During the events of Fate/Zero, she carries Waver Velvet, Iskandar's Master. In Fate/Grand Order, she aids Fujimaru Ritsuka and Mash Kyrielight by carrying them on her back. She also maintains connections with other heroic mounts, including the equine Heroic Spirit Red Hare, as well as Kyogoku, Hakuryuma, Dun Stallion, and Llamrei.
Trivia
Distinct from common historical lore, Bucephalus is explicitly categorized as a female horse within the Fate setting. While many heroic mounts in the franchise are classified merely as equipment or Noble Phantasm armaments, she holds the unique distinction of being a distinct Heroic Spirit registered in the Hall of Heroes.
