Overview
Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald is a prominent magus in the Fate series, particularly known for his role in Fate/Zero. As the head of the prestigious ninth-generation Archibald family, he holds the title of Lord of the Mineralogy Department at the Clock Tower and serves as a first-class lecturer in Spiritual Evocation. Renowned as a prodigy in the Mage's Association, he enters the Fourth Holy Grail War not out of a desire for the Grail itself, but to add combat achievements to his illustrious record as the Master of Lancer.
Appearance
Kayneth has slicked-back blonde hair and blue eyes. His signature attire includes a pair of white gloves.
Personality
Kayneth possesses immense pride stemming from his noble lineage and unmatched genius, often displaying an arrogant and distant demeanor. However, he acts out of a strict sense of noble obligation and logic rather than mere malice; he is surprisingly conscientious, fair to his students, and willing to praise even enemies if their skill merits it. Having lived a life free of setbacks, he struggles to adapt when things fail to go according to plan, revealing a volatile and jealous side under intense pressure. Before his fiancée, he becomes noticeably vulnerable and devoted.
Abilities
Kayneth is a dual-element magus wielding Wind and Water, mastering not only Mineralogy but also Spiritual Evocation, Summoning, and Alchemy. Holding the high Brand rank, his exceptional skill allows him to execute advanced magecraft, such as splitting the functions of a Master by delegating mana supply to another while retaining Command Seals. His signature supreme Mystic Code, Volumen Hydrargyrum, utilizes magically enhanced liquid mercury. This fluid mass seamlessly shifts between an offensive razor-sharp whip, a resilient fluid-dynamics defense membrane, a sensory reconnaissance tool, and a high-speed calculating machine.
Background
Having achieved remarkable accomplishments from a young age, Kayneth solidified his authority within the Clock Tower before joining the Fourth Holy Grail War. After his intended artifact to summon Rider was stolen by his student Waver Velvet, Kayneth procured an alternate relic to summon Lancer. He engaged in the war alongside his fiancée Sola-Ui, who handled the mana supply. However, his conventional views on magical dueling left him vulnerable to the ruthless tactics of Kiritsugu Emiya. During a conflict at the Einzbern castle, an Origin Bullet shattered Kayneth's Magic Circuits, leaving him paralyzed and unable to cast magecraft, ultimately leading to his tragic downfall.
Relationships
Kayneth is deeply in love with his fiancée, Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri, unable to assert authority over her. He holds intense animosity toward his former student Waver Velvet for stealing his catalyst, though Waver later compiles Kayneth's research posthumously out of respect for his legacy. His relationship with his Servant, Diarmuid Ua Duibhne (Lancer), is strained due to a fundamental clash between Lancer's chivalrous ideals and Kayneth's pragmatic view of magecraft, coupled with suspicion surrounding Lancer's influence over Sola-Ui. He views Kiritsugu Emiya with pure hatred for disregarding the traditional pride and rules of magi.
Trivia
Within the Clock Tower, Kayneth was remembered as a pivotal figure whose loss set back the development of magic research by a decade. In pure magus-versus-magus combat skill during his Holy Grail War, he was evaluated by creators as being virtually unmatched among standard competitors outside of his specific natural counter.
