Overview

Yang Guifei is a Foreigner-class Servant in Fate/Grand Order. Based on the historical figure whose beauty led the Tang dynasty toward ruin, she initially appears as an endearing and helpful childhood-friend type. However, her Saint Graph has been heavily modified by an entity from the outer cosmos, giving her a complex nature that combines deep affection with a terrifying potential for obsession.

Appearance

She has very long purple hair styled into twintails with straight-cut bangs, sidelocks, and a leaf-shaped hair ornament. She features blue eyes and wears a black, shoulder-baring Chinese-style dress with detached sleeves. As her Ascensions progress, her appearance shifts into a more alluring and monstrous form with aberrant traits derived from an Outer God. She also carries a biwa lute and a flute.

Personality

Usually cheerful, diligent, and kind, Yang Guifei naturally acts like a sweet childhood friend, though she harbors a calculating turn of mind. She loves lychees, hot springs, singing, dancing, and playing the biwa. Her intense devotion can cause her to abandon her duty for the sake of her deep, overwhelming love, showing a reckless and obsessive side when strongly attached.

Abilities

She utilizes dance-based close combat, strikes directly with her flute and biwa, and controls blue flames along with familiars. Derived from her connection to an entity beyond the stars, she can perform a technique inside imaginary space to create a independently thinking clone of herself. She possesses exceptionally sharp hearing. Her Noble Phantasm, Geishouui Hiyokurenri, summons the star Fomalhaut to incinerate targets in blue fire.

Background

Orphaned in her youth, she was raised by her uncle and originally married Prince Li Mao. Emperor Xuanzong later fell in love with her, leading her to become a Daoist nun before fully becoming his favored consort. Her family's rise to power and corruption eventually catalyzed the An Lushan Rebellion. During their flight, she was executed by strangulation by Gao Lishi on the Emperor's orders. After her death, her body was recovered and altered by an Outer God.

Relationships

She remains deeply bound by her past vows to Emperor Xuanzong. Gao Lishi was the imperial confidant who executed her, while An Lushan was the commander whose rebellion led to her death. In life, she also interacted with the poet Li Bai and the envoy Abe no Nakamaro. Her informal way of addressing Wu Zetian resulted in terrifying anger from the latter.

Trivia

Her character design was created by Kuroboshi Kouhaku, with scenario writing by Meteo Hoshizora. During her Noble Phantasm execution, her eyes visibly change in an unsettling manner. Her former handmaidens appear alongside her as flame familiars that communicate by spelling out words in the air.
