Overview

Angra Mainyu is a Servant of the Avenger class appearing in the Fate series, debuting as a core character in Fate/hollow ataraxia. Named after the supreme evil deity of Zoroastrian mythology, his true identity is actually an ordinary, nameless youth who was framed as the living embodiment of All the World's Evils. Known as the absolute weakest Servant in existence, he possesses virtually no legendary heroism or high-spec combat parameters, operating as an irregular entity within the Holy Grail War system.

Appearance

He typically takes on the form of a youth with short black hair, yellow eyes, and a dark-skinned, lean build. He is depicted topless, wearing a red headband across his forehead. His entire body is extensively covered in intricate dark tattoos, and bandages are wrapped around his hands and feet. In his pure or original state, he lacks a fixed physical form and appears merely as a shadow-like, pitch-black humanoid silhouette.

Personality

Cynical, lazy, and hedonistic, Angra Mainyu carries a lighthearted, mocking demeanor and prefers to act purely out of self-gratification. Despite harboring no genuine hatred or desire for revenge against individuals, his nature inherently drives him toward the concept of killing humans. Nevertheless, he retains an intense fascination with humanity, acknowledging and admiring human goodness and ordinary daily life even as he mocks their flaws.

Abilities

While ineffective against superhuman Servants, Angra Mainyu possesses a unique property that grants him absolute lethal efficiency specifically when facing ordinary humans. In melee combat, he uses twin curved daggers named Zarich (Right Tooth) and Tauri (Left Tooth) to parry and trap enemy weapons. His personal skill Desire for Termination enables temporary bursts of elite-level speed at the cost of self-destruction. His Noble Phantasm, Verg Avesta, is a primitive retaliatory curse that exacts retribution by mirroring any non-fatal damage he suffers directly onto the opponent's soul.

Background

In life, he was a completely unremarkable villager raised without connection to magic. When his community sought a scapegoat to blame for all misery and evil in the world, he was singled out to become the living proof of human goodness. Tortured and imprisoned atop a mountain until his death, his suffering turned him into a nameless ghost bound to the absolute concept of evil. Summoned illegally by the Einzbern family in the Third Holy Grail War, his quick defeat led to his soul being absorbed by the Great Grail, fundamentally corrupting the wishing machine with All the World's Evils.

Relationships

In Fate/hollow ataraxia, he forms a Servant contract with Bazett Fraga McRemitz by answering her dying wish to survive, sustaining her life inside a four-day looping world. He adopts the physical appearance and portions of the personality of Emiya Shirou during these days, leading to a complex overlap between their identities. He also shares a distinct, antagonistic yet conversational rapport with Caren Hortensia, who acts as an exorcist.

Trivia

In Fate/Grand Order, he was added as a secret character designated with an unprecedented 0-Star rarity, obtainable exclusively through the Friend Point gacha at an extraordinarily low drop rate. The monstrous forms he produces during the loop in Fate/hollow ataraxia are known as Unlimited Raise Dead.
