Overview
Mary Read is a Servant appearing in the mobile game Fate/Grand Order and related media. Originating from the Golden Age of Piracy, she is a historical English female pirate who is summoned alongside her partner, Anne Bonny, as a rare two-in-one Servant unit. She debuted in the third chapter of Part 1, Okeanos. Primarily manifesting under the Rider class, she also appears in a swimsuit as an Archer. As a true adventurer at heart, she values the thrill of treasure hunting and the journey itself over using the Holy Grail as a omnipotent wish-granting device.
Appearance
Mary is a petite young woman with short white hair, hair strands hanging between her eyes, and blue eyes. Her design incorporates a hairband and gloves, and her higher ascension stages feature a bunny girl aesthetic with a leotard and fake rabbit ears, along with broken handcuffs attached to one wrist. She also possesses a swimsuit variant as an Archer and alternative outfits styled as From Wonderland, Pirates of the Jungle, and Snow Pirates.
Personality
Mary uses the masculine self-referential pronoun 'boku' and has a cool, serious, and stoic personality. She struggles with expressing her emotions and is initially shy around strangers, but becomes intensely loyal and affectionate once she warms up to someone. Within her dynamic with Anne Bonny, Mary often acts as the sensible counterpart who holds back Anne's overly aggressive tendencies. She develops deep affection for her Master as their bond grows. However, she holds strong contempt for those who pretend to be pirates without the resolve to face the risks.
Abilities
In battle, Mary handles close-quarters swordplay with her cutlass while Anne provides ranged support. Her skill set includes Navigation, Boarding Assault, Marksmanship, Splendid Pirate Princess, and Combination, which allows the duo to coordinate seamlessly. Their Noble Phantasm is Caribbean Free Bird, a targeted anti-personnel combination strike where Mary slashes the opponent before Anne fires her musket. This attack deals significantly higher damage when the duo is pushed into a desperate or dangerous situation.
Background
Raised disguised as a boy by her mother, Mary worked as a laborer and later joined the military. After her husband passed away and her business failed, she returned to sea. Her ship was captured by pirates, leading her to join Calico Jack's crew, where she formed a powerful bond with Anne Bonny. Fighting fiercely alongside Anne, the two became notorious. Following their capture by a pirate hunter, Mary avoided immediate execution due to pregnancy but tragically succumbed to illness while imprisoned.
Relationships
She shares an inseparable partnership with Anne Bonny. She harbours intense romantic affection toward her Master, Fujimaru Ritsuka, often plotting with Anne to corner them. She holds deep respect for Francis Drake as a pioneer among pirates. While she finds Edward Teach's behavior repulsive, she acknowledges his standing as a great pirate. Conversely, she harbors deep disdain for Christopher Columbus and her former captain John Rackham, disliking their lack of readiness to accept the risks of plunder.
Trivia
Official spin-off material mentions that Mary manifests in a somewhat younger form than when she first met Anne in life. Additionally, despite her Third Ascension outfit strongly resembling a playboy bunny costume, the character illustrator explicitly clarified that the attire is intended as a swimsuit rather than a bunny suit. As a result, she does not trigger gameplay traits associated with beast- or animal-eared Servants.
