Medea (Caster)

Overview

Medea is the Caster-class Servant appearing in the Fate series, notably Fate/stay night. True to her identity as the infamous Witch of Betrayal from Greek mythology, she operates as a cunning participant in the Fifth Holy Grail War from her base at Ryuudou Temple. Capable of wielding high-tier sorcery from the Age of Gods, she initially presents herself as a cold-hearted strategist who will stop at nothing to secure victory. Beneath her ruthless exterior, however, lies a surprisingly devoted and romantic woman who exhibits absolute loyalty to the person she truly loves.

Appearance

Medea is characterized by her long blue hair tied in a side braid behind her left ear, blue eyes, and distinctive pointy elf ears. She wears a black hooded robe with long sleeves and black gloves over a purple dress, carrying a magical staff. In her casual attire, she wears a denim jacket over a black shirt paired with a long skirt.

Personality

While Medea presents herself as a ruthless sorceress willing to employ cold calculation for her goals, her underlying character is surprisingly sensible and affectionate. Traumatized by past betrayals, she deeply distrusts handsome men and prefers quiet, honest individuals. When genuinely in love, she exhibits unwavering devotion and a domestic, dutiful nature. She harbors surprising hobbies, including crafting intricate models such as bottle ships and figures, as well as tailoring frilly, adorable clothing to see on cute young girls.

Abilities

As a master of Age of Gods sorcery, Medea possesses high-rank Territory Creation to construct a Temple and Item Construction capable of fashioning pseudo-immortality elixirs. Her High-Speed Divine Words skill allows her to cast grand magecraft in single actions, unleashing energy beams, summoning Dragon Tooth Warriors, and bombarding foes with fire, lightning, and ice. Her Noble Phantasm, Rule Breaker, is a dagger that severs any magical contract or spell back to its original state. She also holds the Golden Fleece for self-healing. However, her physical parameters match an ordinary human, making her vulnerable against targets with high Magic Resistance or direct close-quarters combat.

Background

Originally a princess of Colchis, Medea's life was reshaped when she aided the hero Jason under divine influence, helping him claim the Golden Fleece. After being betrayed and abandoned by Jason, she exacted a devastating revenge, earning her legend as the Witch of Betrayal. In the Fifth Holy Grail War, she was initially summoned by Atrum Galliasta, whom she eliminated following a severe conflict. Near death from mana depletion, she was rescued by Kuzuki Souichirou, with whom she established Ryuudou Temple to fight in the Grail War.

Relationships

Kuzuki Souichirou saved Medea's life during the Holy Grail War, earning her absolute devotion as both her Master and beloved husband. Jason, her former husband from her mortal life, left deep psychological scars through his betrayal. She harbored strong animosity toward her initial Master, Atrum Galliasta, eventually ending his life. To defend Ryuudou Temple, she illegally summoned Sasaki Kojirou as the Assassin-class Servant. Additionally, the witch Circe serves as her aunt and magical predecessor.

Trivia

Medea is affectionately nicknamed Casko by both fans and official works. Despite her sinister reputation in battle, she enjoys indoor hobbies such as crafting detailed scale models. Though frequently teased about her age in comedic spin-offs, her physical age upon manifestation as a Servant is set at around twenty-eight years old.
