He is a second-year student and the Student Council President at Homurahara Academy, serving as a trusted friend and classmate of the protagonist, Emiya Shirou. As the younger son of the head priest at Ryuudou Temple in Fuyuki City, he carries a disciplined and traditional demeanor. Upright, diligent, and perceptive, Issei actively oversees school administration while engaging in daily campus life alongside his fellow students.

Ryuudou Issei is a handsome high school student characterized by his short blue hair, dark black eyes, and eyeglasses. He routinely dresses in the official school uniform of Homurahara Academy, which includes a brown jacket. Within the visual design framework of the series, his assigned image color is orange.

Personality

Ryuudou Issei is characterized by his upright, serious, and highly disciplined nature. Though firm in his principles and unaccustomed to frivolous leisure, he remains rational and willing to adapt when presented with sound logic. He possesses sharp insight, allowing him to perceive the true demeanor beneath Tohsaka Rin's refined facade, leading him to view her as his natural enemy. Issei tends to avoid women due to a distaste for cunning or indirect behavior, though he respects straightforward individuals such as Mitsuzuri Ayako. Raised on a temple diet, he harbors a strong fondness for meat.

Abilities

Having walked two hours daily to commute from Ryuudou Temple to school, Ryuudou Issei possesses exceptionally strong legs and formidable physical endurance. He is an accomplished martial artist who holds a black belt in Karate. As Student Council President, his leadership charisma is evaluated as equivalent to Rank B to C in Servant terms. Despite his temple background, he admits to having weak spiritual perception, while possessing skill in Zen meditation.

Background

Born as the second son of the chief priest at Ryuudou Temple, Issei was raised in a traditional monastic environment in Fuyuki City. After entering Homurahara Academy, he was appointed Student Council President during his second year. He set out to reform school expenditure by balancing budget distribution away from sports clubs, bringing him into administrative conflict with club leaders. Around this time, he formed a lasting friendship with Emiya Shirou, who frequently assisted with school maintenance. Although Issei deeply respects Kuzuki Souichirou, a guest residing at his temple, he remains unaware of the Holy Grail War secretly unfolding on the temple grounds.

Relationships

Emiya Shirou is Issei's closest friend at school; Issei relies heavily on Shirou for maintenance tasks and routinely shares his homemade lunches. Conversely, he views Tohsaka Rin as his natural enemy, having attended the same middle school and seen through her polished exterior. Together with Matou Shinji and Mitsuzuri Ayako, Issei humorously designates them as the "Three Great Enemies of Buddha." He holds deep respect for Kuzuki Souichirou, addressing him as an elder brother, and harbors a favorable view of Caster, whom he regards simply as Kuzuki's partner. He also looks up to his older brother, Ryuudou Reikan.

Trivia

During early production, the creators planned a lengthy training camp arc involving Issei comparable in scale to the Einzbern Castle sequence, though it was ultimately cut for pacing reasons. His design concept called for a handsome young man with a surprisingly deep voice. In Fate/EXTRA, he appears as an advanced AI NPC serving as the Student Council President of Tsukimihara Academy. In spin-off works such as Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya, his intense loyalty and friendship toward Emiya Shirou are frequently featured as comedic gags.
