Overview
Britomart is a five-star Lancer-class Servant introduced in Fate/Grand Order. She is the daughter and official successor of the heroic female knight from Edmund Spenser's epic poem The Faerie Queene. Serving as a knight-in-training under Fairy Queen Gloriana of Pan-Human History, this second-generation Britomart is a half-fairy who journeys to Chaldea to refine her skills and seek heroic adventures.
Appearance
In her First Ascension, she stands 300 cm tall and weighs 300 kg, entirely encased in a heavy black suit of armor known as Fortress Angela. Once unarmored, her true form is a 162 cm tall girl with blue eyes and pointed fairy ears. Her long grey hair is styled in twintails with double buns and held by a hairband. Her outfit consists of a bare-shoulder, high-cut white one-piece swimsuit adorned with gold trim, paired with elbow-length white gloves. Translucent fairy wings temporarily manifest on her back.
Personality
While encased in her heavy suit of armor, she attempts to maintain a stoic and imposing demeanor, though this is merely a front to hide her breathlessness inside the sealed suit. Without her armor, she reveals her true nature as a lively, highly expressive, and empathetic young woman. Guided by a strong sense of chivalry, she readily protects the weak and stands up to the strong. Though earnest and deeply responsible, she has a straightforward, muscle-brained streak and can inadvertently touch upon sensitive subjects during conversations. She also loves bathing.
Abilities
She possesses Magic Resistance B+, Virtues of Chastity A, which grants bonuses during quests involving love and fidelity, and Fairy Knight (Fairy Realm) C, which converts natural mana into energy. Her Mana Burst (Wind) B coats her in emerald gusts. In combat, she emits red laser blades from her forehead, fires vacuum shells, releases wind blades, throws her sword like a boomerang, and shoots red light from its hilt. Her Noble Phantasm, Penetrate Blaidud, is a massive magic lance carrying a curse guaranteed to dismount horseback riders, launching a fierce wind-propelled charge. Fortress Angela serves as a high-defense barrier Noble Phantasm.
Background
Her mother, the original Britomart, was a female knight who adventured alongside the young King Arthur before being elevated to true fairyhood by Queen Gloriana. Born to her fairy mother and human father Artegall, the second-generation Britomart is a half-fairy. Inheriting her mother's name, armor, spear, and legend allowed her to manifest as a full Servant. Guided to Chaldea by Merlin, she eventually met Morgan and earned the title of Expeditionary Fairy Knight.
Relationships
She inherited her equipment and title from her mother, the original Britomart. Her human father, Artegall, was raised by Astraea, giving her a connection to the goddess. Though she never met King Arthur, seeing him moves her to tears. Merlin acted as her guide to Chaldea, while Morgan ultimately recognized her as an Expeditionary Fairy Knight. She shares strong camaraderie with fellow Lancer Bradamante, and holds complex feelings toward Mordred while sharing the commonality of concealing one's face behind heavy armor.
Trivia
The original poem The Faerie Queene was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I, who served as the historical inspiration for Queen Gloriana. In Japan, her name inspired a popular internet pun on buri (yellowtail) and tomato, prompting fans to actually prepare yellowtail-and-tomato dishes. Her initial appearance in heavy, mecha-like armor created a striking contrast with her unarmored form, sparking widespread fan discussion upon her release.
